its probably the kickdown cable look under the hood its the cable that runs next to the throttle cable see if there's alot of slack or if its too tight and not letting it release all the way.
No assumptions. Diagnose problem. Pinch off the fuel return line. Check fuel pressure--I don't wanna!PITA! The fuel pump won't run if the fuel filter is plugged up. Toyota's have a gas tank drain plug!!!!!!!!! My '84 takes a 3/8 " ratchet. Cool.
There may be a fuel pump relay that is toast, but I suspect the filter, off hand. A plugged filter will overwork the pump and cause the engine to run rich.
Check temp sensor and TPS, throttle positioning sensor. The power control module,"pcm.is a possible thought.Just check all connections. It is always a good idea to spray WD 40 or equivalent in the connections.
I had the same problem. My car sat for a few days and when i went to start it i heard an extremely loud pop (kind of like a backfire). After that it would start and sound fine, but die 2 seconds later. Thank god my bf is a mechanic he knew instantly that the pcv valve hose that connects to the intake manifold unplugged itself. He plugged it back in and it runs fine now. I didnt however get a check engine light, but i only tried to start it twice before he fixed it because i was scared it jumped time.
improper maintenance--throttle body needs cleanin etc with tuneup-new plug wires etc----get a repair book at parts place--------tranny is old so it cud be many things-maybe the tv valve that aids in shiftin needs ajust--there are test for the torque convert--a pressure test is done on the fluid-if it is normal then look at other things also like a solenoid, a governor, an accumulator--------scan car and maybe do a fluid and filter change
