My problem is with a 1982 crossfire model. I am repoacing the spark plugs. The front 2 on each side were rather easy to replace but the rear plugs are very difficult to reach. Is it because of a heat shield that must be removed to replace the plugs or should I do it from underneath the car?

  • bbigrnfig Jul 09, 2009

I am looking for the best way to do the job with factory guidance that was published at the time.

  • bbigrnfig Jul 10, 2009

I'll try it from under the car but those heat shields look like they will still be in the way.

Let you know in a few days.

We did them from under the car and that is what the service manual says, use a spark plug boot release tool avail from any parts store for around $8, DO NOT PULL ON THE WIRES.

Hi there,

Yes you can try doing it from underneath the car, but it is quite difficult to do from there.

Good Luck!!
Thanks

Looking from the front of engine to the rear on the passenger side 1-3-5
Looking from the front of the engine to the rear on the drivers side 2-4-6

The engine has coil over plug with coils only on the drivers side. The spark is shared via spark plug cables to the plugs on the passenger side. So If you are replacing the spark plug cables:

#2 cyl.coil drivers side shares spark with #5 passenger side-
#4 coil drivers side shares spark with #1 passenger side-
#6 coil drivers side shares spark with #3 cylinder passenger side.

Replacing spark plug wires for 2003 Buick Rendezvous

The front bank of plug wire is easy just remove them one at a time and trace them back to the coil pack. making sure you put them back in there clip harness. The rear bank of plug wire is much harder In the shop we have a tool the titls the engine a little foward and allows you to reach in over or around the engine to gain access to the rear bank of spark plug wire . this tool is sold by OTC , Snap on , Matco , Mac or you might try your local parts store to see if they have one for loan or rent . the firing order on your buick is coil nearest the drive side is 1/4 middle coil is 3/6 and the end coil nearest the passanger side is 2/5

If someone has altered the disstributer, pull #1 plug, put finger over hole, turn engine over until compression on that cyl, line up timing marks (ball park only) and rotor will be pointing at the correct terminal for #1 cylinder plug wire connection, in the cap.
