2000 Grand Am SE Headlights and Tailights Stay On

2000 Grand Am SE When the key is in the "On" position (engine running or not) the headlights, tail lights & dash lights stay on whether it's daylight or dark. My headlight switch in in the "auto" position. There is nothing covering the light sensor on the dash. I have also wiped the sensor off. The lights were working fine until one day I was out during the daylight, went into the store. When I started it back up the lights came on and since then they always come on when the key is "on". The lights do turn off when I have the parking brake set then turn the key to "on", but once the brake is released, the lights come back on. "The lights" refer to headlights, tail lights & dash lights (and radio light dims) I want to know if there is something I can fix myself and how to do it. I have found nothing on the internet regarding the "sun load sensor"

My headlight switch has 3 settings, Auto, parking, and headlights on.

I don't believe you understand my problem. I have headlights that automaticly come on when it's dark. There is no OFF position. When my headlights work correctly in the Auto position, they would come on when it was dark. In the parking light position, just the yellow parking lights, tail lights & dash lights would be on and in the Headlight position the headlights, tail lights & dash lights are on just like if it was in the auto position and dark outside. These are the only options I have. NO OFF! Right now the headlights, tail lights & dash lights are on all the time no matter which position the switch is in or if it is daylight or dark

Start by setting your auto headlight switch to off if this solves it replace your headlight switch If your car is equipped with daytime running lights there could be a short bridging them with your auto head lights look for broken or frayed wires do this also if you have installed or had someone install an aftermarket stereo or speakers/sub woofer, amplifier. Good Luck with this

There is of course te option that you could use your cars headlights in the headlight ON position when driving at night. Then use it in the headlight OFF position the rest of the time or Learn to switch it to OFF when exiting the car. This will NOT COST A THING TO DO

Yes I fail to see the problem if they would not come ON when you needed them THAT WOULD BE A PROBLEM. This is merely an inconvenience

Park lights and tail lights stay on.

Your park/ headlights should have power when the key is in the off position. I would look at your headlight switch.

Are tailights supposed to be on when headlights

When/if you turn the headlights on with the switch the tail lites should be on but if you are asking about when you start and run the car without manually turning on the headlights then no, the headlights you are referring too are actually day time running lights (your headlights @ 1/2 the power) and are for safety. when those are on your tail lights will not be on.

1994 Pontiac Grand am Tailights all work normaly except when the headlights are on and then they don't work at all?

Could be the headlight switch.
The switch has two sets of contacts for the parking lights, the park position and headlight position.
You may need to check the circuit at the switch to see if you are loosing power when the switch is moved from park to head.

I have a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited i have brake lights that work when i apply brakes, but as as soon as i turn my headlights on the fuse blows and i have no working tailights with the headlights on. ...

There is definitely a short in the park lights system. Did you just have a radio installed....since the illumination wire sometimes gets grounded and will cause that fuse to blow until you fix that wire.

Head, tail lights, and fan stay on with key off

check fuse #16 in fuse box, if it is blown, make sure the wiring behind the fuse box isn't melted. hope this helps. p.s. it's the inside fuse box not the underhood

What started this mess? tailights, fog lights, brake lights....

The relay has nothing to do with the tail lights, but replacing the switch sounds like a good idea. There's a nut holding it in place, see http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/electrics/switches/switch-headlight/1027524/ to get an idea of the construction. And the price. This is not worth fiddling about unreliable workarounds...
In addition, if fuses 15 and/or 16 burn frequently there might be a problem with the tail light cabling.

Good luck

Yes the sun load sensors can go bad. Do you have a dash mat covering the sensor?
