Many of these that bolt into the trans from the top have a plastic bushing on the bottom of the shifter stick than can break off. Remove shifter stick and replace bushing.

Shifter cable broken for the third time ... Chrysler PT CruiserBrake Light Switch Replacement, Shifter Stuck .
The gear shifter doesn't connect to the clutch, the clutch pedal and clutch release fork connect to the clutch. The shift linkage connects to the transmission through a 3 part lever with 2 adjustment points.
The original shifter bush (shifter sheet) is made of nylon and after 20 years of sitting in oil they crumble away and disappear.
Replacement is cheap and easy.
HI,
Looks like your shifting lever bushing needs to be replace.
That loosenes when shifting is cause by the bushing that are already loose.
You could replace it by yourself by removing the shifting lever, a pivot bolt that holds the bushing and the lever.
Hope that helps you out!
Thanks for using Fixya!
You will need to remove the shifter and have a look witch bushes on the shifter is worn and replace those bushes. It is not a very difficult job and can be done by your self.
i have owned several 240's (i drive a 1990 245 at the moment) and have had this problem in the past. it is not a bolt that you have to replace, it is the shifter-link bushings and the c-clip on the bottom of the shifter-link. if you jack your car up and place the jack stands at the front jack points so you can scout underneath the car. at the front end of the transmission (where the O.D. selanoid wire comes out of the body) is the shifterlink and in the shifter-link should be 3 holes (there should be 3 bushings in there and a c-clip keeping it all together), replace the c-clip and bushings and i promise that your shifter will be VERY TIGHT. good luck :)
