There are several parts involved and your problem could be with any one of them. Watch what the electric latch does with the trunk lid raised while you have a friend press the release button. I'm guessing the problem is with the button switch itself, but it could be an electrical problem somewhere else or it could be with the solenoid that is mounted on the trunk latch.
Take the button off inside the car. See if you can figure out if it is defective. If you have an electric meter, check it to make sure it has continuity when you press it. Also see if shorting the contacts on the plug that hooks to the switch make the trunk open like it should.
You should be able to figure it out.

Disconnect battery while car is running. If car dies altenator is bad. With car not running check battery with volt meter. Should read 12 to 12.46 without engine running. Start car and check battery with volt meter, should read 13 to 13.50. If less than 12 with engine running then altenator is no good.
Sounds like your car will need a new thermostat heater unit. Its all one piece and will need to be replaced as an assembly. It should be under warranty seeing as the car will not pass state inspection with this failure. It is computer controlled.
