It just presses on a lever inside the shift handle, pressing it down. You can just remove the handle and replace it with another, or you can simply reach in with your finger and press it downwards to release the shift lock

SOURCE: car will not shift into gear

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

My trail blazer will shift to park reverse and neutral but not to drive

Have someone check your motor mounts and your shift linkage for wear, binding, and or damage from car accident or from foreign object under the car.
Problem should be in one of those areas.

2005 dodge grand caravan dashboard reads reverse but gear is in park will not start, took positive and negative term off. Took out the fuses for the ingition switch and battery. Pulled on the gear under...

Maybe something wrong with neutral switch? Usually it is on or close to transaxle shift lever, follow the shift cable to shift lever, the switch has multiple wire connector.
It may be possible to start vehicle by jumping the load side of starter relay, key on. There are safety issues trying this, the vehicle will crank in any gear. Make sure tranny is out of gear, parking brake is set, block the wheels, whatever it takes to be safe, safety is your responsibility.
If the problem isn't that neutral switch, then I don't know? Any applicable trouble codes?

When I have a no start condition I work the maul selector from park to low 1 back and forth and the car starts

Your safety interlock switch is going out or is not adjusted properly. There is a procedure for adjusting the switch. The switch is on the transmission in the engine compartment. If you want to adjust the switch, loosen the botls holding the switch and follow steps 7-8 below. Else, you can just replace the switch entirely by following all steps.

The neutral start and backup switch are one unit mounted on the top left end of the transaxle. The neutral start portion of the switch allows electrical current to travel to the ignition system when the shift selector is in park or neutral only. The vehicle will not start when the selector is in any other gear. The backup portion operates the rear backup lamps when selector is in the reverse gear.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION See Figures 1 and 2

  1. Make sure the shift selector in the Park position, then apply the emergency brake.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Disengage the neutral start switch electrical connector, then remove the shift control lever on top of the switch.
  4. Remove the two neutral switch attaching bolts, then remove the switch.

  2. Loosely install the two attaching bolts and washers.
  3. Insert a No. 43 drill (0.089 in.) through the hole.
  4. Tighten the attaching bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs. (9-12 Nm), then remove the drill.
  5. Engage the switch electrical connector, then connect the negative battery cable.

2003 wont disengage from 4wheel drive have already tried to drive it in reverse to disengage it

Try this: shift into neutral, wait a few seconds, then try to disengage. If it doesn't work, try again, but turn vehicle off after shifting into neutral, wait about 15 seconds, hopefully that will do it.

Will not shift out of park

Look in your owner's manual under fuses. There is a fuse for brake shift lock solenoid (fuse #1). You can still drive your car by turning the key on just enough to shift to neutral, and then starting it in neutral. You can shift to drive and reverse, but if you shift to Park then you have to turn the engine off and proceed as previously

Shift jammed when trying to place in parking

You may need a new automatic clutch or new transmission. This occurs often in Fords, mostly because people get lazy when shift gears and do not fully disengage gears, but rather pull up and down. See your mechanic.

I can not get the Auto shift lever out of park

I initially tried to override the Brake / Transmission switch by disconnecting the battery but that did not work. I solved the problem by disconnecting the wiring from the actual gearbox, and manually moving the linkage at the gearbox. After doing that everything was re-connected and now works fine.
