When I purchased a 1989 Ford F-250 and I filled the front tank with gas. The front tank pumps gas to rear gas tank was overfilled and spilling onto the ground. Any clues on what could be the problem?

Rear tank is getting overflow from front tank.

Unless someone previously worked on the gasoline lines and switching system, I would totally agree. The tank swithing mechanism is actually rather more complicated than it needs to be on these ford trucks. You have a helper pump in each tank and a main pump located along the frame underneath the drivers door are. Along with this main pressure pump, you also have the switching mechanism. There are supposed to be one way valves that would prevent just such an occurrence, but these valves can become gummed up and not properly operate over time. I believe this is what is happening with your particular truck. My recommendation would be to replace the the entire tank switching assembly with a brand new or factory rebuilt unit. Do not waste your money on something from a wrecking yard as you never know what you will be getting or how long it may last. Best of luck.

Hello Sam, I think you have a problem with your fuel solenoid valve that switches from front tank to the rear . I do know that Ford dealer has a recall on '93 F-150 like mine. I'm not sure about yours.

Up until 1989, EFI fuel systems in the F250 actually used two fuel pumps; a low-pressure pump in the tank and a high-pressure pump mounted on the frame.seddy29732_7.jpgHigh Pressure Pump

The part on the fuel rail you are referring to is most likely the fuel pressure regulator, which, if bad can also cause fuel delivery problems. From 1990 and up, the two pump system was replaced with a single, in-tank pump.seddy29732_9.jpgHope this info helps you out!

1991 FORD F150 DUAL TANKS,GAS LEAKING OUT OF ONE TANK FROM ( GAS CAP )

Have the same truck and had the exact same problem. Mine spilled out the front tank. Ford did a recall on this problem. They put valves on the lines outside the tanks. Mine had already been done so that was not the problem. The pumps have valves inside for the return lines. I replaced the rear pump, didn't fix it. Replaced the front pump and Voila ... it was fixed. Bad valve in the front pump return line.

Ok sounds like a electrical problem being an 89 its fuel injected eather 5.0 or 5.8 each tank has its own fuel pump and sending unit a dashboard switch, relay, fuse and switching motor. check your fuel line from the front tank it could be clogged. check for 12v pwr. to the front pump the sending unit will require 4V but not much. as soon as the fuel rail pressureizes the ECM shuts the pump off using the relay. Usually the tank switch goes bad first.

My 1989 f250 has dual tanks, it only wants to pull gas from the rear tank and the return fuel fills the front tank. we have replaced the dash switch and the pump twice. it seems to work for a short time...

Make sure you have the check valves in place on the lines at the sending units on the tanks. If the switching valve on the frame rail goes bad it can push fuel back up the return to the opposite tank than you are pulling from causing fuel to push up and out the inlet. If these were not removed and replaced on the new sending units they will have to be purchased from the dealer.

Need to find the fuel pump for a 1989 mercedes benz 300e

that particular model has an external fuel pump
is located underneath and if you take the rear driver side wheel you will get to it easier but not if you are going to replace you fuel pump replace the fuel filter also or otherwise the new pump will not last.
and have a large container handy because wend you take the fuel pump off. you will spill a large amount of gas .
the tube going from the pump to the gas tank in on the bottom of the tank and will spill all the gas in it unless you move quickly.

Rear tank full and selected for use but draws from the front

hi your symptoms suggest that you have slight blockage either in fuel line or most likely at point where rear tank fuel line enters the switch over reason ? you say runs ok on rear tank at 55mph? but when demand for more fuel / speed above that pump /engine cannot deliver ? due to narrowing of fuel line (tuberculation) so check flow from r/tank and for any debri inside?

F 250 WONT STAY ON

If your front tank was much less than 1/2 full you may have a bad pump in the front tank. each tank has a low pressure pump that feeds the high pressure pump on the frame rail. If the pump in the tank is bad, the high pressure pump will draw gas from the tank (especially the front tank) until the tank get below 1/2 full then it loses its prime and the engine will stall. Try disconnecting the electrical connection at the high pressure pump on the rail and then cycle the key on and off and see if you can detect the tank pump running or not.
