Pull the inside door handle and it should open or unlock the door and pull on the outside handle and it should open.

Look into the lock opening on the door frame for a part you can reach with a flat-blade screwdriver.
These can normally be opened if prying on the lock mechanism.

If you want to risk another door, watch the mechanism move when locking it manually.
You should then be able to reset both.

Ford explorer door lock

Pull panel off and have a look at the connection rod and latch assembly.
Rod should go from lock/handle to key hole, to latch assembly.

Could also end up being a bad lock solenoid. (the power lock itself)

Hope this helps

We have a problem with the doors locking when you shut them. they wont unlock with the key and we think that te locks are broken. do you have a solution for this?

Its possible taht you have any linkage problem there; first check the FUSE, use this Ford-Explorer Owners Manual to know the specific location.

To physical check,

  1. Remove the door trim panel and watershield.
  2. Disconnect the rods from the handle and lock cylinder, and from the remote control assembly.
  3. Remove the latch assembly attaching screws and remove the latch from the door.
  4. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Door Lock Cylinder
  1. Open the window.
  2. Remove the trim panel and watershield.
  3. Disconnect the actuating rod from the lock control link clip.
  4. Slide the retainer away from the lock cylinder.
  5. Remove the cylinder from the door.
  6. Use a new gasket when installing to ensure a watertight fit.
  7. Lubricate the cylinder with suitable oil recommended for this application.

Hope helps (remember rated this).

1998 4x4 ford explore driver side door will not

There are long linkage rods from the inside handle to the latch assembly. There should be an adjustment on these links. Too tight keeps latch from locking, too loose it won't unlatch. Use a screw driver or rod to trip the latch asm so you don't have to keep opening and closing the door. Also if it sticks closed and won't unlatch, the door won't be locked closed on you.

Drivers door does not lock

you will have to remove the door panel, check for a disconnected linkage or a broken door latch, sometimes it just needs cleaning and lube, good luck.

Door won't unlatch or come open

Ford had a problem with the door handles not working properly. They are cheap plastic. If the exterior door handle is broken, you will need to drill out the rivets that hold it in, and then get the door open and the panel off. You have to disconnect the rod going to it. Then, remove the handle. If you don't want to drill again, I suggest replacing the rivets with a bolt and nut easily obtainable at your hardware store. I've found that a M7 bolt works very well. If you are having a problem with the interior door handle, it's the same problem. Remember to check your door latch because if your exterior handle is broken, then your latch isn't working properly. I got one at Ford for about 40 bucks.
