If y.ou have an electric release for the trunk, then unplug it and use the key. If the trunk stays shut, then its an electrical problem. If the trunk still opens by itself it is mechanical and use the gap the other expert recommended. If this a new vehicle for you there could have been collision damage in that area with poor adjustments or cracked parts.
So I have a 2012 Ford Focus base trim level. I have 2 10" 800 watt subs in a ported box in the trunk. In the last 12 hours my trunk has popped open 4 times while driving at variable speeds but my bass was hitting hard every time. The system is relatively new, within last 2 weeks and problem is even newer, never happened until a few days ago.
I thought it was somehow related to the bass and maybe the air pressure but after review of some comments about similar problems it sounds like it might be electrical. I guess my question is; where do I start, the dealership service dept or where I bought my subs?
Out of adjustment or not being closed tight

Start by getting either a mechanic or someone with an OBDII scanner to read the code so you know where to start. Lots of time a loose gas cap will cause a "Evap system small leak" code which illuminates the check engine light for a while. Other than that I can't help you much without knowing what code comes up.

It sounds like your latch has double locked. Here is the fun part, can you drop your rear seat and get into the trunk? If you can look for a tag that is possabily glowing pull it to release the emergency latch on the trunk. then with your finger lock the latch and check to see if it is leaving a large enough gap fot your pinky finger to fit in. if it is then you have reset it. if not then pull the emergency release a few more times

Sounds like the keyless entry system is on the fritz. You will probably have to get a new brain for the keyless entry system.

Check your fuse box, look on the diagram and locate the fuse (10 amp most likely) for the auto trunk. The clicking is the relay, it also operates the keylees entry for the doors.
Good luck
