New alternator put in two weeks ago. Drove to store (7 Miles)two days ago and when I came out, car dead. Jumped it and made it home - no problems. Dropped off groceries and drove to auto parts store (40 miles) Had check done on alternator and battery - no problems according to them. Drove to daughters house (20 miles) 1 1/2 hrs. later drove home (35 miles) about the time I was 5 miles from home car beeped and radio shut down. 4 more miles and car decellerated to 1 mph Headlights dim & dash lights about gone. Drove last mile doing abt. 1 mph and made it into my driveway. Died about 25 yards from house, in drive way. Same thing happened before replacing alternator. WHAT do I check now? Break light flickers on and off. Mostly off around 35,000 rpm. Battery "gauge" reading goes up and down while driving. PLEASE tell me what to try next. I'm going crazy. Been without a reliable car for about 8 months now.

Don't remember what kind it was. I bought it and had a guy with a shop put it in for me. Will take it back to him and see if he can figure out what the problem is.

It is the alternator or the regulator. get parts store to swap out under warranty.

I would have a load test done on the battery as there is a dead cell evident from the number of jump starts you need. Have an auto electrician test the alternator for charge rate and out put. check drive belt condition and tension.

Car won't start until jumped

Most likely the battery. Most auto parts stores will check it for free with the hopes that you will buy your replacement from them.

Your solution is a little hard to find too bad they told you to change the alternator. It is a simple fuse you need to change that is blown. on the expetion sometimes there are two one in the fuse box and one under a black cover follow the alternator small wires it should point to the direction of the small i believe 7.5 amp fuse. it was hard to find and i do this for a living. good searching.

Likely a battery problem. Batteries tend to fail when they sit for a while. If your electrical guage was reading 9 - 14, with a dead battery, the alternator was working. Also, if the alternator was dead, you'd likely have noticed dimming headlights and other electrical issues.

But, you could take the battery to AutoZone and let them check it - free.

check to make sure the alternator is charging the battery.crank engine while idling the alternator out put should be 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts. if not alternator is not charging the battery.if alternator is charging battery.the battery is weak.if its over 5 years old its more likely battery.if battery not old checks out good .replace battery cables..

91 Cressida won't start

Lead acid batteries can "die" catastrophically. This is actually not all that uncommon. If the battery is new, it should be under warranty. I would take it back, and have them test it. It it fails, which I believe it will, then there is the problem. If it passes, then your alternator is probably bad. The chances of it being your alternator are slim as you did jump the car off, and drive it for a while. If the battery is too weak to start the car, it will not maintain vehicle operation very long without help from the alternator.
