On that model the only way to access the trunk when the latch has broken or has malfunctioned is by removing the entire rear seat assembly.
You need to pull the bottom section(the part you sit on) of the rear seat up and take it out of the car. Under the back section of the seat you will find a pair of bolts that hold the upright section of the seat to the car body. Remove the bolts and lift the seat back section up and remove it. Remove the protective layer and you can crawl into the trunk. You can then access the trunk latch from inside the trunk.
The vehicle should of course have been engineered with at least a narrow center fold down section of the seat from where you can access a manual trunk release . No doubt as a silly cost saving measure it was not designed this way.
In the trunk of the car there is a black panel behind the rear seat remove screws that hold this panel on. There are three magnets at the top of the panel. Remove panel and put screws in safe place. Go back to the inside of the vehicle there are three brackets that hold in top cover of back seat remove that lay it down in the back seat. You now have complete access from the rear seat to the trunk. To reassemble reattach rear seat top. Reassemble black panel in trunk just attach to metal with magnets and then put screws back in. Hope this is helpful and informative.
Be sure that your model has fold down rear seats...you should see the seperation around both rear seats...if equipped, the fold down release is located at the top corner of each rear seat...pull the lever up to release...if your model does not have the fold down option...you will need to remove the rear seat...remove the lower cushions first...look on the lower front of the seats for hold down bolts...second you will need to remove the top of the rear seat...hold down bolts are at the bottom of the top cushion...after removing the bolts (one each side) you need to push up on the cushion to remove...this will then allow access to the trunk...find the trunk latch and try to release by twisting the latch cable...Hope this helps...
To avoid getting it towed to the dealer (where they'd remove the rear seat to access the trunk), you can get out your socket set/tool kit and remove the rear seat yourself and reach into the trunk. If this car has fold-down rear seat(s) or bolster(s), simply fold them down and reach in. Haynes manual (or online manuals) for this car aren't yet accessible, but a call to your Kia dealership's service dept. may get a mechanic on the line who can give you a few good tips, or pay a handy neighbor to figure out how to remove (and re-install) the rear seat to get access to the trunk...
In most cases, the factory installed rear speakers are accessible through the trunk, not behind the seat.
Open your trunk and check if you can see them by looking up and forward in the trunk opening.
