Question about 2008 Buick Lucerne

1 Answer

Engine or transmission knock / rattle upon acceleration under load. Only occurs when driving, not in neutral / park . Once noise starts and vehicle starts moving, I can stop or start rattle/ knock noise by pressing brake pedal. Occurs mainly under load @ approx 2500-3500 rpm.

I had the same problem on my 2006 Lucerne and it was the engine mount located on the front of the vehicle behind the radiator.

Rod knock upon start

Not sure on model but to me sounds like its a dodgey valve lifter when the seals start to go they cannot hold the oil and when there under pressure they basically empty them selves hence when you turn the engine off and restart you get a rattle sound untill the valve fills again as long as the cars running ok leave it untill you have to replace them unless there easy to do sone are sone are a pain

Knocking/tapping sound behind left side of engine

if the knocking is occurring while vehicle is in motion it can be a driveshaft cv joint bad..if it occurs while not moving but in gear, it could be the exhaust rattleing under the car..may also be the front end suspension bushings worn..

Could be a noisy valve or lifter in the engine, or an exhaust leak.
Can you make the noise happen by revving up the engine with the car parked ?

Yes, it COULD be a timing chain rattling, but again, your guess is probably better than mine at this point.

Without the ability to hear the noise it is impossible to say. Noises can be very difficult to locate when you are standing right in front of the vehicle. It is completely unachievable to perform this task remotely.

Are you sure it is coming from the engine and not the transmission? Or maybe even the exhaust? It is not likely for a timing chain noise to go away as a reult of putting the transmission in gear.

As for the misfire, when does it occur? is it at idle? Is it when you are accelerating (putting the engine under a load? Does it only misfire at high speeds? Much more info needed here.

Loud Vibration / Sound Under Acceleration And Starting Engine.

Get the engine mounts checked. A bad mount may allow part of the engine to lie on a body or frame part, allowing engine vibrations to become very loud. Torquing of the engine (under load) can cause the same type problems.

When I start the car and drive, (mostly when accelerating) there is a noise that sounds like marbles in a can. What is that? Transmission?

sounds more like spark knock?

you did not specify in your ad what year or engine size of your vehicle but I'll assuming that timing is not adjustable

Therefore, the spark knock, assuming it isn't because of timing is likely caused from hot spots in your combustion chamber

Most shops have a decent method for cleaning for less than $100

04 Endeavor rattling noise

I had the same problem! I crawled underneath the car and discovered that a heat shield on the exhaust header pipe was corroded and rattling against the exhaust pipe. (Before the muffler)
I removed the portion and clamps and solved the problem. Give it a try.
