2003 Ford Taurus stalls at idle

Recently I have had problems with a 2003 Ford Taurus stalling while idling at a stop sign or light. I. The engine light came on., so I took the car to Auto Zone to have the OBD engine code read. The codes were P0171 (System Too Lean (Bank 1)) and P0174 (System Too Lean (Bank 2)). The AutoZone rep. said that the 2 oxygen sensors (1 for intake, and 1 for exhaust) need replacing. Also he said that the Mass Air Flow and Idle Air Control Valve sensors needs replacing.
What I have seen is a noticeable increasing vacuum leak as the engine warms up coming from the front part of the engine directly under the intake manifold. I have followed the (aprox 1/2'' dia..) vacuum line that starts just after the MAF sensor to what appears to be a sensor or connector? I can not tell what the sensor/connector is without taking the manifold and various related components off. Anyway, when I completely disconnect this vacuum line the car dies out immediately. This sensor/connection has nothing to do with the O2 and MAF sensor. I have tried to find a vacuum routing and component diagram for the 3.0L, V6, Duratec but engine compartment has none. Can some one tell me where a vacuum diagram might be available, or what this leaking component is called so this problem can be solved?

Make sure it's not a vacuum leak. I had this same problem and the codes read for oxygen sensors but it was actually a deteriorated PCV valve elbow which connects to the intake manifold. I put my thumb over the hole in the valve and my engine didn't idle rough anymore. It's a special order part and only $16.99 at AutoZone.

SOURCE: p0171 and p0174 codes

P0171 System too Lean (Bank 1)
P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)

If a car has a check engine light on and has P0171 and P0174 codes stored, the most likely cause is a vacuum leak. These codes are set by the car’s computer when it sees too much oxygen in the exhaust. Excessive oxygen readings in the exhaust will set lean codes. This does not mean that the oxygen sensors are defective. It is a common mistake for people to replace oxygen sensors when lean codes are present. Just because the code is related to oxygen sensor readings, it doesn’t mean that the oxygen sensors are bad. If both of these codes are stored this means that both banks of the engine have excessive oxygen in the exhaust. If the oxygen sensors are replaced it’s most likely that the same codes will reappear. It is very uncommon for two oxygen sensors to fail at the same time.

Therefore the most likely cause of P0171 and P0174 codes is a vacuum leak. The source of a vacuum leak can be one of many things. The most common cause of a vacuum leak is a leaky hose. Vacuum hoses over time can become dry and brittle. The rubber deteriorates and can leak causing a vacuum loss. Many times a leaky vacuum hose can be found by listening for a hissing sound. A large vacuum leak can even make the car run rough at idle. In some cases it will not idle without feathering the gas pedal.

SOURCE: 2005 Ford Taurus SE 3.0L V6 OBD Codes P0171 and P0174

The P0420 code is a Catalytic converter efficiency code check the compression.Swap the #1 injector to a different location to see if the code follows.Test the coilpak. A cracked exhaust manifold is the most likely cause p0171 and 0174 Induction air leaks, vacuum or some kind fuel restriction, weak fuel pump, restricted fuel filter etc.You also could have an exhaust leak near the upstream o2 sensor. If youtake it in they will probably use smoke to find out where the leak is.

SOURCE: OBD Codes P0401; P0171; P0174. EGER valve sensor

p0401 egr flow insufficient. p0171 system to lean ( bank 1 ). p0174 system to lean ( bank 2 ). common problems that trigger p0401--

  • Restriction in the EGR passages, usually caused by carbon buildup
  • The EGR Valve is defective
  • Lack of proper vacuum or electrical signal to the EGR valve
  • Malfunctioning EGR Vacuum supply solenoid
  • Lack of proper EGR system feedback to the computer from the:
    • Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP)
    • Differential EGR Pressure Feedback Sensor (DPFE)
    • EGR Valve Position Sensor (EVP)
    • EGR Temperature Sensor - p0174--
    • In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling also
    • Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
    • Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure p0171- and p0174 are about the same.

2003 Ford Explorer XLT Wants To Stall At Low Idle,, especially when at a stop light

How does it idle in park , does it run ruff or smooth? Are any lights lit on the dash , check engine etc. ? Could have a partially plugged IAC air passage .idle air control (IAC) valve ! The engine computer uses the IAC to control idle , when under a load such as when put into gear the computer raises the idle ! It does this by allowing more air to by pass the closed throttle into the engine raising the idle ! If these air passages clog they restrict the air flow an cause a idle problem ! Now if it runs ruff at idle in park you could have vacuum leak ! Rough Idle How to Fix Ford Taurus Engine Stalls at Stop Signs

2003 Ford Taurus wants to die when coming to a stop

TRY THIS AND LET ME KNOW IF IT CORRECTS YOUR PROBLEM
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
