It tells the computer were cylinder 1 is in order to allow the ignition and fuel injectors to fire correctly so the engine is in sync, and yes it is necessary for the engine to run properly.

Check the condition of the oil and if it is grey or milky then there is an internal leak allowing water into the oil ( happens from corrosion). Check cooling system level at the radiator. Run fault codes to check cam/crank position sensor anjd it may be necessary to check the cam shaft is turning over as after sitting for some time the cam belt may have deteriated and has broken

The cam shaft postion code is caused by the distrubtor. it is inside of there. Those vehciles had a lot of problems with the ditrubtors.

Went to work one morning and going home after work and car will not start getting fuel pressure and spark.

replace crankshaft positon sensor or cam shaft postion sensor they control in what order to fire the spark common issues when a crank postion sensor fails is non start situations

My 1997 gmc jimmy will turn over but not start?

are you gettin fuel ? are you getting spark ? if so is it bright blue it should be if its orange is bad
check and replace fuel filter if all that is good check and replace crankshaft postion sensor and or cam shaft postion sensor as they tell the ecu when to fire the spark and to what cylinder

No spark

I've had those cam sensors short out the computer in those Jeeps. It's worth a try.
