Not sure what an sb combo van is?
Please provide year, make, model, engine size - will help with troubleshooting. There is always a reason for a problem.
Does the temp gauge show overheating?
Does it boil the coolant or leak it out?
Has the thermostat and/or water pump been tested or replaced?
Does it have a engine belt powered radiator fan or is it electric? And does it work?
Let me know? Maybe I can be helpful !

Testimonial: "Hi, A its a 1996 holden sb barina combo van and has a 1.4 ltr engine does not use water and just about to change the waterpump and thermostat. The temperature gauge goes up to 110 in about 25km and has always sat about 80 on the temp gauge. It has a electric fan which i changed for a new one today but didnt make any difference the fan comes on but it doesnt seem to come on as early any more since i had new temperature sensors put in. Thank Jo"

Over heating will probably be the cause of most problems as it sends the ECM crazy with so many sensors inputting information
If you have a viscous fan hub then replace it as it is the prime cause of overheating .have a compression test done to check head gasket and cracks
If you have electric fans make sure that they are working
ckeck coolant level at the radiator cap

My timing chain idlers are gone the motor is running like a hairy goat

The tensioners are there to keep the chain from snapping , it would be advisable to have them replaced before the chain snaps and you left with a hefty engine repair bill.

Have machined the head, put in a new gascet, new radiator, waterpump and thermostat. still overheats, but not always.

check if it has a viscous fan hub on the water pump
if it has , replace it
if you have electric fans , run the fault codes to check for faulty coolant temperature sensor
check for a loose /shorting wire on the gauge sender unit

Engine temp

remove the wire from the temperature sender unit and earth it out on the engine . Turn on the ignition and see if the gauge goes to overheat. If it dose replace the temperature sender unit. If it doesn't replace the gauge.

Temperature gauge

Temperature gauges will not work properly unless there is water in the radiator. For the light to come and the length of time it takes to work I would be checking the coolant level at the radiator cap first then checking the operation of the temperature sender unit.

Radiator fans don`t work on town and country van causing engine to overheat

The radiator fan relay is located behind the grill on the driver's side of the vehicle. There is no relay in the distribution box. There is a 40 amp fusible link, however, in that box.
The relay (behind the grill) works in conjunction with the coolant temperature sensor, the A/C high pressure switch, the transmission temperature sender and the PCM. This relay will run the fans from 30% to 99% of full speed based on the signal coming from the PCM. This is all according to the official Chrysler shop manuals that I have for my 2005 Town and Country van.

Hi I have a VW 1988 Type 25 and after a new engine the temperature gauge stopped working so I had the sender replaced and now when the van is running the gauge goes all the way up to the far right - but...

first you have to check the 3 or 4 wire from sender have no ground or short circuit . the fan motor is connect direct from fan control unit no short or ground or by pass to battery .thermo s.w (3wire socket) on right side radiator have no short . general you have short circuit to positive .check the main engine ground cable .

Van overheating when stuck in traffic fan not coming on changed two sensors engine temperature and temperature controlno change. Fan does work when put power to it externally. Van still overheating when...

u should check for a faulty thermostat first, they are only a few quid and easily replaced. if no change ur most likely faults are a blocked radiator or faulty water pump. u dont sayhow old ur van is but after the thermostat go to the radiator, when its hot check the bottom of the rad to make sure its hot, also brown water means u need to bback flush ur cooling system. even tho u have changed some sensors doesnt mean u got the fan switch sender, dash board sender and fan sender tend to be different sensors, so just double check.

My van overheats except when heat is on! whats the problem?

hi this could be a couple of things, first is thermostat, this might not be opening so the water is not circulating around all of the system and when you turn on the heat, the small matrix heater inside acts like a radiator itself, or your main radiator fan is not working, hence the same as above, check the main fan on the radiator is coming on when the temperature gets to its normal running, if it does not then either the fuse has blown, or the temperature switch for the radiator is not working and needs replacing...hope that helps
