Check the solenoid. The solenoid is the real switch between the battery and the starter, the key switch only activates the solenoid. The click you're hearing is probably the solenoid trying to click in, if it's faulty it makes no contact and the starter will not turn.

SOURCE: 1994 Toyota Tercel Starter Problems

sounds to me that you have an igniton problem not a starter problem and or if you have or had an alarm system could be cause if u do give me feedback and i will explain but seems that your starter is fine from what u say but if you think in terms of the elemts to start a vehicle batery gives pwoer to ignition which sends to starter which gives spark etc i would check you ignition system something is causeing a short and not alowing starter to function

SOURCE: Turn key, nothing happens

It could be the park/neutral switch, next time it doesn't start try wiggling the shifter in park while turning the key, or shift to neutral and see if that will work. if that doesn't change the problem I would replace the ignition switch.

SOURCE: Wont start, gives error code IN 02 on dash

I had the same problem with my 94 jetta, I would also have the alarm turn on as I connected the battery, if you lower the fuse box being careful not to disconnect anything, there is a box to the upper driver-side aria(that is if you are laying on your back looking up under the dash) this is the alarm control unit, there should be a white label on the wires indicating so (think it says alarm in German) theres a 6 pin(wire) connector and a 10 pin. unplug both connectors and look at the 6 pin connector. There is numbers where the wires are located on the connector, if you take a piece of wire and "bridge" wires 5 and 6 (The largest wires on the connector, red/red w/black stripe) your starter should work, any problem with the alarm system can cause the starter to be disabled. after bridging the wires or simply connecting them do not plug anything back into the alarm box, after this you standard vehicle alarm will be disabled permanently, but you will be able to start your car. If this dose not fix the problem you may have a defective starter, hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1995 BMW 525i. Car will not start or turn over.

I had the same problem, after having the car towed to four Seasons, it was discovered that the electrical portion of the ignition switch was defective. Works like a charm. Part number 61 32 8 356 026 Hope this will help.

Have a 2014 Polaris scrambler 850 just done a full rebuild new pistons rods main bearings everything but crank and noticed it was almost impossible to turn by hand With out the head on finished...

could have problems with crank shaft bearings , should have had the crank ground and main bearings line bored , did you adjust the crank shaft thrust bearing for end play, after the crank shaft main bearings are torqued down you should be able to rotate it by hand .

I have a sportsman 90 2006 when you go to start it all it does is pull in the relay you can hear it click

Hey Truman,,
First you need to check the battery... it needs 12+ volts AND enough cold cranking amps to function.. A battery shop can check the cold cranking amps for you... CCA is what "pushes" the voltage to make everything work... 12 volts might make the lights work,, but NOT have enough amperage to make the solenoid "switch" .. If the battery checks out good.. and it still will not turn over .. its time to check the solenoid... you will see two large threaded studs on the side of the solenoid...You will need to "jump" between these two studs (one is the connection from the battery and the other connection goes from the solenoid to the starter).. WARNING >> SPARKS WILL FLY - A THERMAL EVENT IS POSSIBLE IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL!!.. When you jump the solenoid, the engine should turn over...if it turns over.. try it with the key on.. it should start... If it turns over/starts.. the solenoid is bad... (disconnet the battery when you replace the solenoid!)

Unusual for the starter to fail on a one year old car.
You are having it towed to a dealer for warranty repairs, right ?

MY 1995 volvo has power but wont start

volvo 1995 850 glt- same problem- turn key no crank no noise.
lights on dash come on.
1.) removed battery ground wire for 2 minutes.
2.) took wire to ground and moved to back of battery and jiggled it around
3.) connected battery
4.) car starts up-
Not starter,not solenoid,not battery,not ignition switch

ANSWER-Ground wire to chasis not getting good contact- replace battery ground cabel and make a better connection to the chassis.

Hope this is it- my car has had this happen for an extended period of time- have not found complete resolution to date- Please let me know when you find a solution.-JMM

(850/95 turbo) car won't turn over, it clicks ?

If you are satisfied with the Starter and the Battery. Check the connection to the Starter Solenoid Relay and Maxi Fuse. If all is still OK. Make a new Frame/Body ground to Engine casing Ground connection, if possible reusing the same, but cleaned, connection points .

Sounds like you need a starter, or you have a loose wire somewhere under the hood.
