What part do I need? It opens from the inside. The handle is not snapped.

  • WBROCKSTAR Mar 12, 2015

Tell your son to click the following link and scroll down to the diagram that shows the components inside the door(behind the door panel)This diagram might help him diagnose which component is faulty or whether the door lock actuator might just be sticking. Its the component that locks/unlocks the door when you push the lock button or activate the keyless entry button. That actuator might be getting ready to go out or its wiring harness terminals might be corroded. If the actuator is sticking in the locked position, it wont allow the door handle to open the door.On a vehicle with manual locks, you can simply pull on the inside door handle while the locks engaged and that normally causes the lock to disengage and the door opens. On a power lock,if the actuator is in the locked position the door handle wont function. This diagram shows a great outline of the partshttp://www.autozone.com/repairinfo/repai...

Are you saying the inside door handle isnt snapped, but the door wont open by pulling on the inside door handle or is it the outside door handle thats not working??Both the inside and outside door handle has a spring and other components on the backside of the handle which cant really be seen unless you remove the whole door handle assembly. One of these components are most likely broken or the rod that attaches between each handle and the locking mechanism(part that locks into the door striker to keep the door closed and releases it too)might have come loose from the back of the handle. The outside handle is usually mounted to the door by pop rivets or bolts/nuts.The inside handle is usually mounted with screws, but it really depends on what kind of car youre driving.Youll probably have to remove the handle to inspect it for damage.Open the door and watch the locking mechanism for movement while youre pulling on the door handle. If it doesnt move when you pull on the handle, the handle is definitely broke or the rod has come loose from the back of the handle.

Testimonial: "I didn't post this correctly. Sorry about that. I have an '03 Sport Trac. The handle looks like it's riveted. My son manually unlocked it from the inside, relocked it, and unlocked it. That made it start working again. I still think there is a problem. What do you think it is?"

Door handle broke

can you open from the inside, its the only way you going to get to sort this, failing that you may need to get a new door card and rip the one off the door at the top corner near to the lock latch and split the plastic and pull the door pin inside to open then take the door card off. sometimes you can do it with out braking the door card but would not say it will not brake. inside there is a plastic clip that the handle go's on then another bar to the lock. this is designed to snap if some one trys to open the door with force.failing that the handle part can snap where the bar fits to it. that you would need to change the handle.

Rear door handle doesn't open the door from the inside

Sounds like the linkage has come off the handle inside the door. The door panel will need to be removed to gain access to the linkage. Be careful when removing the panel! Some are held on by plastic snap clips, others by screws (some hidden some not), Also the linkage may be retained by a small plastic clip that holds it to the handle itself. If this is broken you can usually find a replacement at a auto parts store in the HELP section or by showing and asking a sales person there.

How to replace exterior door handle on the back passenger side. What tool is needed?

there are two rivets that you will have to drill out. on the inside of the door, there is a threaded clip that holds the linkage in, you will have to open it (it opens like a door, it may be a little stubborn, but it will open). then put your new handle on, and then the linkage back in, and snap the clip back in place. you will need one of the bigger pop rivet guns because the rivets are 1/4 ones. also, when you go to rivet the handle back on, tape some cardboard under the handle. that way if the rivet gun drops after it snaps off the rivet, it will not scratch the door. hope this helps you.

Front driver door won't open from the inside only

The linkage is probably broken or snapped out of place from inside the door panel.
You'll feel that the handle is much easier to move than the other doors.

If you are confident and able, take the door apart removing the screws and snap pieces and look for the missing linkage. It's usually a snap piece that holds a rod in place on the back of the handle. They break all the time, or dry rot, or jarr out of place. They're easily available at your local auto parts place or even dealership for just a few bucks!

Good luck!

I have a 99 528i, driver side door won't open from inside or out.

to be honest i would need the car in front of me to diagnose correctly but from the sound of it the mechanism inside the door is worn, the lever that springs open the jaws has worn to the extent that it will not push the two contacts inside the lock open to allow the door pawl to swivel around releasing the door.Only way is too remove the door trim if you can and operate the mechanism with a big screwdriver to open the door then renew the mechanism
