Your transmission will do this if it senses a problem with 2nd gear (or 1st, 3rd, or 4th for that matter)
You can try to disconnect the battery overnight so that it may reset the error.
Ultimatly if the error does not reset or comes back it is time to head to the dealer. That transmission is 'sealed' as in there is no dipstick to check fluid levels or top off fluids.

Try to flush out you old trans fluid,see if this helps first.If its brown,that's bad it needs to be red.

What you need to realize is noone here can fix it and I doubt you have the tools to diagnose this. Maybe this maybe that is only going to confuse you even more. If the prooblem is real you need to take it in before something is damaged. All replacable components are inside the transmission. Only the computer is external. This may be engine sensor related so the only way to find the problem is with a diagnostic scanner.

if you have a hydraulically assisted clutch, check the reservoir. it's located on the firewall in the vicinity of the brake vacuum booster. if it's low/empty, fill it. you may have air in the system which will require bleeding. what is the mileage? you may be due for a clutch. if you google, "hard shifting manual trans" you will gain more insight on the matter.

I don't have that prob on mine but I would suggest you change your ATF asap with Mobil1 or equivalent. Do a complete flush and observe the fluid taken out if there r chunks of metal w/ it. If none you're in luck.After flush, test drive only on "D" and see if the harsh shifting is still there. If no Mobil1 is available just like here in San Diego, use Valvoline MaxLife for cars w/ over 75k miles. Owners manual specifies a certain number on recomended ATFs and it's in the MaxLife. I just used it and seems to be working good. Good luck

2002 volvo s40 hard shifting


could be CV axles. once the joints get wore it allows for slack when stopped. jack it up and spin the tire back and forth to see if any play in axle

You will have to strip the box and check the syncro''s on the gears . It sounds like a broken synchro ring.
