SOURCE: we are putting a clutch

Hi. Welcome to FixYa. I will do my best to assist you, with the hopes that you will award me with a FixYa rating for my assistance.

What I do, in my service department, is to pull the transmission and the transfer case as on unit. It is faster, and much simpler. There is no reason to pull them separately. That is way too much work.

I hope that this helps you out.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

Is it reasonable to increase gear oil weight to 75w 120 in my 1997 3.4L 4x4 Toyota Tacoma manual 5 speed, and rear axel and transfer case?

no never use wrong gear lube in any M/T box, only OEM spec,
or the synchro rings weil be super unhappy, balking and grind.
use only OEM spec lubes,
the axles yous Hypoid rated GL lube, GL5, only use this lube in axles, or as OEM told you to do . GL3 lube in main axles will wreck the pinion fast. huge forces there. ok? tread easy here and not listen to some kid tell you how to hot rod axles on wrong lube.
75w -120
the first number must not be changed, 2nd, 120 higher maybe.
some transfer cases have 1 syncho, and must not be wrong lub.
user guide says
m/t box.
Multipurpose gear oil API GL-4 or
GL-5 SAE 75W-90
same for transfer case.
the GL5 must say on the bottle safe for yellow metal or brass synchro as Pennziol does, for transmission m/t
so it GL5 will not eat the rings.
for real axles the best hypoid gear oil, like in rear/

OK 120 should be ok on hot climates, 120 means hot side.

I would like to change the oil in my manual transmission, what fluid does this require? How much?

you can use 80-90 weight gear oil or auto transmission oil to replace it with.the full level is when the oil is at the bottom of the fill hole on the side of the transmission housing.trans differ in amounts but you could start at 3 liters then check the level.

What kind of oil do I put into the transfer case? Is that why the computer keeps saying check 4 wheel drive?

no, DO NOT use gear oil. The transfer case uses the same type of automatic transmission fluid that the transmission uses. Is the display saying "service 4x4 switch"? If so it is common and the 4WD indicator light switch is bad and needs replaced. It's only purpose is to tell the driver info center what 4 wheel drive mode the transfer case is in. This switch will not affect the function of the 4 wheel drive. The correct fluid for the transfer case is +4 automatic transmission fluid.
