You find a wiring diagram for the headlight system for an '06 grand prix, and then you get into the maze of wiring for this vehicle. It isn't like the old times when you had a headlight switch with a built-in circuit breaker, a dimmer switch, and the headlight bulbs, maybe a fuse for parks, sometimes a relay in the circuit, but it was simple and easy to figure out. Nowadays, your GP will certainly have a Body Control Module that controls the lighting. There may also be a lighting control module, or not, depending on the capabilities of the BCM. And there could also be a Daytime Running Lights module, which just makes it just a LITTLE bit more complicated, every day.
I know because my son's '05 Buick century has this very intermittent problem of the headlights disappearing for seconds at a time, and once for days at a time. So he ran over a bump and the headlights just began working again as if nothing wrong. And now for about 10 days, there has not been a repeat. But when it happens again, I will have to get my head back into the dreaded headlight circuit !
Now why would you want to disable the high beams, even as a temporary measure?
Joe, It is very likely your LOW BEAM RELAY, they are ONLY $40 Auto Zone or other parts stores. I would have wasted almost a $1000 on parts and labor if my car was not under warranty for all the labor and parts GM certified mechanics wasted replacing a computer brain and the switch on left side of steering wheel. The switch they tried to make me pay for on my second attempt to fix it but but I freaked out on them. My low beams would just go out at any time, very dangerous. This is part # info you need when you go to parts store. You need GM part # 15016745 a.k.a R6100 Mine just says R6100 on the parts box. Look at your manual for its location in fuse box under the hood. It is so simple to replace, a 4 year old could do it. There is reference made on the net by some that Parts stores may tell you the part is a blower relay but ignore that, its for the low beam. Visit this post first to make sure this makes sense to you ok. if the link does not work search "07 grand prix low beam headlights shut off intermittently?" and you will find the forum with at least 20 people who have had this issue. All 06-08 grand prix's should be recalled http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/pontiac-grand-prix/T30BFP69UH765355Q I hope I have helped you out.
COULD BE FAULTY DRL HEAD LIGHT RELAYS OR FAULTY DIMMER SWITCH.SINCE HEADLIGHTS TURN ON AUTOMATIC.TRY USING MANUAL HEAD LIGHT SWITCH ON TURN SIGNAL SWITCH LEVER SEE IF HEADLIGHTS STAY ON IF LIGHTS STAYS ON YOU HAVE FAULTY DRL HEADLIGHT RELAY.IF LIGHTS STILL FLICKER OFF.YOU HAVE BAD DIMMER SWITCH.
I'm having the same issue. I have changed the bulbs and fuses. I can't find a relay but I don't think that is the issue. Some other people have suggest the Dimmer Control Switch. I am working on that. Please let me know what you find out.
these switches operate on copper slide and most times these slides get corroded with a green substance that a simple sand paper job will take care of however there are a lot of part so have a mechanic do it
