If your car has a cable speedometer it needs to be removed from the transmission to install it on the cluster first. Lift up the rubber boot that covers the end attached to the transmission. Now find and remove the retainer clip, take a pic or sketch how it looks installed before removal. Some versions of the cable use a hex threaded end and will unscrew with a wrench. Now you can pull the cable out of the transmission do no use excessive force it will just pop out. With the slack you can now easily attach the cluster and the electrical plugs.

The answer above is correct. This way, you can turn the inner cable to match the stub, with the seating groove inside the speedo. Same will have to happen back down at the tranny. A bit of a struggle, but can be done alone.

Disconnect it from the transmission. Loosen any brackets, pull it up threw the fire wall and connect it to the instrument panel first. Been there, done that.

My partner just purchased a 1988 toyota hikux pickup truck ..the previous owner says theyve disconnected the speedo cable...where/how do I reconnect it?? Where is it located??

Well, there's only two connection points. They could have disconnected it at either place. One end goes into the transmission near the back of it. If you can, follow the speedo cable coming out of the firewall on the driver's side- it should come out right in line with the dash cluster, and bend down towards the tranny. The cable kind of goes straight in to the transmission. Some have a threaded cap, yours may have a retainer bracket held by a small bolt. Remove the retainer and the cable will pull straight out. ...If it's all secure, they must have disconnected it at the other end.

The last place you check is sure to be it-murphy's law. The other end of the cable is connected to the rear center of the speedometer gauge. What they did, if they had enough room to get a hand under the dash and up to the cluster, you can feel around for the cable and follow it to the cluster. There you can squeeze a plastic pin, or sometimes a plastic retaining ring, as hard as you can towards the center of the cable, while yanking back on the cable to free it. They get ornery and sticky with age. You have to keep at it, or oops, check if the cable there is retained by a threaded cap. But hey, if it was disconnected here, you just have to put it back. If you cannot in any way get your hand up under the dash there, they must have removed the cluster from the front. It only needs to come out a few inches to disconnect or reconnect the speedo cable. It's a lot of work, but sometimes it's the only way.

Odometer not working

Could be that speedo cable has become disconnected or that the inner shaft has broken. The speed cable is connected between the back of the instrument cluster and the left side of the transmission. Check under the car that the cable is securely fitted to the side of the transmission. Disconnect it and and check on the condition of the square drive flexible shaft. The spinning of this inner shaft is what conveys the output shaft speed of the transmission to the instruments. The instrument cluster can be removed but pushing a length of coat hanger wire with right angle turn on its end between the the cluster and the dashboard surround. Turn the coat hanger to hook behind the cluster and pull forward to remove it. Try several points around the cluster. It is best to disconnect the speedo drive cable to withdraw the cluster (after electrical connections have been disconnected. check that the speedo cable is secure to the back of the instruments. If you remove the cluster completely follow the path of the speedo cable. If you have to replace the cable, tying a length of string to the speedo cable end first and posting the string down the cable path will help the re-installation enormously. Simply pull the string whilst reinstalling the instrument cluster until the end of the speedo can be got hold of. Refit the speedo cable to the transmission only after the instrument cluster is back in place.

Panel light burnt out 2002 Avalon

Remove lower dash panel, remove screws holding cluster to top of dash, remove middle dash panel around steering wheel. this will expose additional screws holding cluster in place, when all screws are removed the cluster will move forward a bit. THEN you must reach behind and release the speedo. it wil either be plugged in or a spring clip holds it in place. push the spring clip toward the rear of the vehicle, while keeping no tension on the speedo cable, while it is fully depressed, gently and firmly pull the speedo cable away from the cluster. Two harness connect to the cluster, each has a pressure clip, just squeeze and pull back on harness connector to remove. When released the cluster will be freed. With the cluster face down, the bulb with remove with a counter clockwise turn, just confirm whcih one you want to change. I'd recommend changing all! check that all bulbs fuction before resecuring all pieces.
