you don't have to relieve fuel pressure if you had your vehicle sitting overnight ; if you're scared about fuel pressure, then follow the manaual by removing the fuel pump fuse and cranking the truck over a few times.

make sure you use new Fuel Injection hose clamps, not regular worm gear hose clamps

ok, the factory service manual linked doesn't really give you where it is; from google search

it's on the frame rail on the passenger side near rear tire area

there may be a fuel filter shield in the way, unbolt that first...to make it easier to handle the hose clamps

use penetrating oil at the bolts first so you won't break the bolts/ nuts if they're too rusty looking

the following video is for a 2003 model, but it should be similar

his description on that youtube link for changing it every 5k is OVERKILL! i changed my filter for a similar nissan van at 40K and it was still good; just did it for preventative-maintenance

WHERE IS THE FUEL FILTER ON A 88 NISSAN PATHFINDER

Fuel Filter REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
NEVER SMOKE WHEN WORKING AROUND OR NEAR GASOLINE! MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO ACTIVE IGNITION SOURCE NEAR YOUR WORK AREA! 1970-83 Carbureted Engines The fuel filter is located on the right inner fender in the engine compartment. It is a disposable cartridge type.
  1. Using a pair of pliers, expand the hose clamp on one side of the filter, and slide the clamp further down the hose, past the point to which the filter pipe extends. Remove the other clamp in the same manner.
  2. Grasp the hoses near the ends and twist them gently to pull them free from the filter pipes.
  3. Pull the filter from the clip and discard.
  4. Install the new filter into the clip. Push the hoses onto the filter pipes, and slide the clamps back into position. Start the engine and check for leaks. Fig. 1: Fuel filter - 1970-79 85851035.gif
    Fig. 2: Fuel filter - 1980-83 85851036.gif
1984-86 Carbureted Engines The fuel filter is located on the inside of the frame above the left rear spring front shackle. Changing the filter is VERY awkward. Since it is in-line and below tank level, fuel will pour from the fuel lines when they are disconnected from the filter. The only way of preventing this, is to siphon all of the gasoline from the tank before replacing the filter. Another possible method is to clamp and plug the fuel line, but this is not recommended because of the danger of leaking fuel or damage which could occur to the fuel line when clamped. It would, therefore, be a good idea to run the tank almost dry before changing the filter. Once the tank is dry, disconnect the fuel lines at the filter, unbolt the old filter and install a new one. Reconnect the fuel lines, fill the tank, start the engine and check for leaks. Fig. 3: Fuel filter - 1984-86 85851037.gif

Fig. 6: Removing fuel filter - always replace fuel line clamps 85851164.jpg
Fuel Injected Engines WARNING
Never attempt to remove the fuel filter without first relieving the fuel system pressure!
  1. Release the fuel pressure from the fuel line as follows:
    1. Remove the fuel pump fuse at the fuse box.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. After the engine stalls, crank the engine two or three times to make sure that the fuel pressure is released.
    4. Turn the ignition switch OFF and reinstall the fuel pump fuse.
  2. Loosen the hose clamps at the fuel inlet and outlet lines then slide each line off the filter nipples.
  3. Remove the fuel filter.
  4. Replace the fuel filter. Always be sure to use new hose clamps. Fig. 7: Fuel filter - 1986-88 VG30i 85851038.gif

Try a fuel filter:
Fuel Filter REMOVAL & INSTALLATION The in-line fuel filter is located in the engine compartment between the fuel tank and the fuel rail.
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Position a suitable container below the fuel filter to collect any excess fuel that may leak from the filter and lines. CAUTION
Observe all applicable safety precautions when working around fuel. Whenever servicing the fuel system, always work in a well ventilated area. Do not allow fuel spray or vapors to come in contact with a spark or open flame. Keep a dry chemical fire extinguisher near the work area. Always keep fuel in a container specifically designed for fuel storage; also, always properly seal fuel containers to avoid the possibility of fire or explosion.
  4. Remove the retaining clip from the fuel filter upper hose.
  5. Disconnect the upper hose from the fuel filter and drain any excess fuel into the container. Plug the hose.
  6. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  7. Remove the retaining clip from the fuel filter lower hose.
  8. Disconnect the lower hose from the fuel filter and drain any excess fuel into the container. Plug the hose.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Unfasten the filter retaining clamp screw and remove the fuel filter. Fig. 1: The fuel filter is located in the engine compartment, between the fuel tank and fuel rail — 1.9L engine's underside shown 90981p47.jpg

Finding were a filter is

On these vehicles, the fuel filter is located on the fuel line to the carburetor. Special care should be taken when removing and installing the fuel filter, not to bend or distort the fuel line in any way.
  1. Remove gas cap to relieve any pressure that may be present in the fuel system.
  2. Remove the air cleaner bonnet assembly.
  3. Using a backup wrench on the return line fitting on the top of the fuel filter, remove the fuel line with a flare nut wrench.
  4. Using a backup wrench on the fuel filter inlet fitting, remove the fuel line from the fuel filter with a flare nut wrench.
  5. Using a backup wrench on the fuel filter outlet fitting, loosen the fuel line and remove the fuel filter from the engine with a flare nut wrench.
To Install:
  1. Apply a drop of engine oil to all the fuel line nuts and flared ends.
  2. Position the fuel filter with flow arrow on the filter directed towards the fuel line going to the carburetor.
  3. Finger-tighten the fittings at the fuel filter outlet, inlet and return line into the top of the filter.
  4. Using a backup wrench on the fuel filter fittings, tighten the fuel lines in the following sequence:
    1. Tighten the outlet and inlet line nuts to 15-18 ft. lbs. (20.0-24.0 Nm)
    2. Tighten the nut on the return line at the top of the filter to 6-9 ft. lbs. (15-18 Nm).
  5. Inspect the fuel lines and carefully adjust if they are interfering with the carburetor, air pump, or fuel filter housing.
  6. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks at all the connections. Retighten if necessary.
  7. If removed, install the air filter bonnet assembly.
