Since the switch in inside the steering column, the steering wheel will need to be removed to reach the multifunction switch in order to replace it... http://www.kiopman.com/removal-1653.html
Remove the plastic steering column calm shell covers (screws on underside of the covers) and the switch is easily accessed for removal from that point.
I can only hope it is not the same as a '94 car! I just completed the repairs on a 94 Ford car, and on it, here is what we found. The shift linkage is inside the steering column. There are 2 black nylon/plastic bushings that wear out, and when they do, the shifting gets sloppy first, and then the silly thing falls apart, and you get stuck in gear! You have to remove the steering wheel and the steering column to fix this, but it is not really hard to do so. Be blessed as you find your answers.
It sounds like a linkage in steering column or at transmission has come undone or broken. You should be able to see the arm that comes down from the steering column to the transmission if you crawl under with a light. That's could be an an easy fix, but getting in the steering column is best left to professionals. Hope that helps.
sounds like you got some wires shotring, did they check wiring? remove column panels and inspect wire contacts, plugs and harness for signs of scorchining or arcing or burnt insulation, repair as nessasery
If the SID Unit (or profiler) displays "Steering Lock Malfunction" get to your local dealer promptly. There has been issues with the steering lock module and they are now being replaced by Saab under warranty. The module is located under the steering column and must be replaced depending on the part number on the module itself. See your local dealer to find out if your module needs to be replaced.
