The stock Bosch fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and can be accessed by removing the rear seat. Certain models have been recalled due to cracked flanges, permitting fuel to leak. If you smell gasoline inside or outside the vehicle or see wet fuel lines underneath the vehicle, contact your local Volvo dealer immediately. See below:

Check Injectors spraying Fuel when you start.
Fuel pump prime because you hear the pump. IF pump is weak, then your Fuel distributor doesn't have correct pressure to spray fuel when injectors open. Do your sparks plug wet after trying several times.
If they are dry then you don't have fuel. Replace injectors
If they are wet then you don't have correct air:gas ratio of 14.6:1. Replace Fuel distributors
If the location of the wet spot was towards the rear of the car by the fuel full hose and as you said the leak stopped as you use up fuel and lowered the fuel level in the tank than the leak is located in the fill pipe area or tank. Next time you fill go under the car and look for the wet spot.
Sounds like a leaking heater core or faulty hose connections.
Sniff a tissue after blotting some of the wetness or; it may not sound appetizing, but to check if it is coolant + water, take a clean cloth, blot the wet spot and touch the other side of the cloth to your tongue.
Coolant doesn't have a strong odor unless it is hot but it lends a sweetness to the coolant that is easy to detect.
That is why one shouldn't dump coolant on the ground since domestic animals will lap it up.
not the pump its the flexible line from metal pipe to the sender unit ,these pipe dont last like they used too and if you look you will see where the pipes have gone porous ,check under bonnet as well on the other ends
