Why is my car running fine, but the check engine light came on? The code reader I have shows ISO9141. This is a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Sport model.

Hello:

ISO9141 is not a Diagnostic Troubleshoot Code, it is a protocol language used by car manufacturers.

There are basically 5 types of language protocols used by auto manufacturers:
1.) J1850VPM (Variable Pulse Width Modulation at 41.6 Kbps)
2.) J1850PWM (Pulse Width Modulation at 10.4 / 41.6 Kbps)
3.) ISO 9141-2 (Asynchronous serial communication at 10.4 Kbaud)
4.) ISO 9141-2 and KWP2000 (Asynchronous serial communication at 10.4 Kbaud)
5.) ISO 15765 CAN (250Kbps or 500Kbps)

What does this mean to you?
It means that each protocol differs electrically and by communication format.
The Code Reader or Scan Tool you are using must be compatible with the vehicle's specific protocol in order to communicate.

So if your reader is not ISO9141 compliant- you will never be able to pull the codes from the OBDII module.

Hope this explanation helps.

Why does my 2001 cavalier die when coming to a stop?

If it dies when you are coming to a stop after being on the freeway, chances are the torque converter solenoid is sticking in the transmission.
If it is doing it around town, I would look at the throttle body and idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by regulating air flow into the throttle body.

Engine light stays on, then engine light flashes while running crappy. If I touch the gas pedal just right engine runs fine and light stops flashing(but stays on). 1996 cavalier 2.4L OHV.

Most local parts stores like Autozone or Advance auto will check the trouble codes for free and help you get the parts you need to fix whatever is causing the engine light to come on.

I have a 96 cavalier z24. when I start it up the

Autozone and similar stores will check the codes in the computer for free usually. That is the best place to start. Other possibilities are Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (saying the engine is cold when it's not) or excessive fuel pressure (bad regulator or blocked return line)

What do codes p0335 and p0341 mean on 1996 Cavalier?

when your engine went into that 5 second sputter,
your computer or "PCM" did not get a constant signal from the crank or cam sensors that the engine was running.
These two sensors tell the computer what RPM the engine is turning so it can adjust fuel and spark.

Check engine light and ets light come on on 96 cavalier

You need to put a code reader on the car to retreive the codes .The trouble code that caused or is causeing the problem will show up and lead you where to look and if the code is not active then the reader will be able to turn out the light.[Check your gas cap to see if it's tight].

PCM Troubleshooting Check light on with no code reader power

You can't jump the connector to get codes on OBD II. (Pre 1996) Try hooking back up you code reader. If it doesn't communicate, check the fuse for the cig lighter. This fuse should also power up the diagnostic plug.
