Assuming this is an automatic, the linkage could be caught between gears. This happens when a motor mount is broken and the engine has been punched to high rpms. As the engine rocks over, the linkage comes out of alignment.
Place in Park, Turn the engine off. Open the hood and manually pull the throttle cable wide open as far as it will go. Repeat a few times. While you are there check all three cables as they attach to the throttle bracket. If all is well the next start up should be fine.

Check the condition of the tranny oil on the dipstick. If it's black and smelly, the tranny clutches might be worn out. Make sure you have enough fluid in there first. Check the fluid with the car engine running and the tranny in park. The level should be between the 2 marks.
