How do I correct for hydrocarbon leak of 139 ppm left rear. 95 cutlass 3.o engine

When you say leak are there cracks or damage to exhaust and are the hydrocarbon level high ? the 139 ppm is what you have what should they be ?sounds like there are other problems ,do you have any codes ?

Reason for failing emmision hc ppm idle on a 1996 chevy suburban 454 truck

Hi!

First of all, HC (Hydrocarbon) are the residue of petroleum based product combustion. If your HC reading are higher than the OBD2 legal limit (220 ppm), the most common causes could be a leaking fuel injector, abnormal oil consumption, a faulty Oxygen sensor or worn out spark plug / distributor cap / spark plug wire. To be honest, I would need more accurate details such as NOx ppm, CO ppm, CO2 ppm and Oxygen ppm and if there is any repair that have been made on the car recently to give a proper diagnostic.

What dose HC (PPM) stand for how do you get the numble down

HC is hydrocarbons. This is unburnt fuel. PPM is the amount of fuel in the mixture and it is in PARTS PER MILLION.
There are a lot of possible causes:
1. Dirty air filter. Not letting enough air into the engine.
2. The ignition timing is bad. It is too advanced.
3. The ignition system has many parts that could be worn. Plugs etc
4. There is a vacuum leak.
5. The Catalytic converter is worn out.
6. Low compression due to valves or piston rings
7. Too much fuel being put into the intake manifold. Bad injectors or carburetor.

Failed MEAS

wow, no context but i can read your mind?
ok SMOG failed. right?
what speed, there are 2 in uSA, 15 and 25.mph.
so there are 3 tests, which one. all are PPM in usa.
parts per million.
but is that HC , CO, or NOX? or ?

based on your numbers is HC
hydrocarbons or in barstool, its raw gasoline leaving rear of car.
unburned fuel..

572 ppm is way too high 12-19 is normal
id say the CAT is bad.
but can be , engine is bad, and burned out the cat.
that is why all savvy mechanics, check the that the engines
holds closed loop status, (EFI closed loop) at the speed yours failed.
if not in closed loop the cat will burn up (rich)
that is first.
Once that is cured. you check HC again. if out of spec
you did burn up the can , new cat time.

that is the correct way.

Well I failed my emissions HC(PPM) test it a 95 olds cutlass supreme 3.1L. I need to no solutions on what it could be. any help would be great, thanks.

It is possible that you need to replace your catalytic converter. If your converter is bad it will cause you to fail an emissions test every time.

1991 olds Cutlass Ciera. 3.3l, failed the NO emission test. Results: HC ppm 12 .......limit 62 CO % 0.09 ..... limit 0.35 NO ppm 948 ..... limit 700 Before testing changed plugs, wires,PCV,oil. Also had...

Since your cat was replaced you should be looking at fuel problems...even gas cap seal....check fuel pressure,fuel regulator,and evap system.>canister or purge solinoid,o2 senser...high nox is caused by the cat or fuel problems on these engines...high pressure in the combustion chamber...lean condition>air leak on hoses,or high compression caused by carbon build up ...there is no EGR on this car so don't waste time looking for it...hope this points you to your problem

follow upper radiator to center of engine between heads at center of transmission, thermostat inside the housing that upper radiator hose connected to, its between motor and exhaust pipe crossover

My 1992 Cutlass Supreme SL Olds failed emissions.

High NOX readings indicate a somewhat lean condition IE: hot exhaust. Possible causes are cracked and leaking vacuum lines or lazy oxygen sensors. If possible have a reputable garage with engine electronics scanner services check the sensor to see if its helping to create the lean condition

95 aerostar 3litre problems with emmisions test

The egr is the only way to lower the no. heet only works with co and hydrocarbons see if the egr tube is full of carbon or the egr system is blocked up with carbon I have owned aerostars for 10 years and have had both the 3.0 and the 4,0 vans and .be thankful you have the 3.0 you would have to take off the upper intake to deal with the egr on the 4.0

Here are detailed instructions on the location, removal, and re-installation of your fuel filter. Hope it helps and have a great day!

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Carbureted Engines
These vehicles use two replaceable fuel filters. A small one is in the fuel line under the hood; a larger one is located at the rear, just inboard of the left rear wheel.
Whenever the filter(s) are replaced, take great care to avoid the entry of dirt into the lines. Also, pay attention to the correct installation position. It is possible to install the filter backwards.
FRONT
See Figure 2
  1. If applicable, disengage the filter or hose from its retaining clip.
  2. Using two fuel line clamps, pinch off both fuel lines. Take care not to crush the lines; just clamp them shut.
If the fuel hoses are hard or cracked, it is necessary to replace them.

  1. Loosen the fuel line clamps and slide them back.
  2. Using a twisting motion, remove the fuel lines from the filter.
  3. To install, use a new fuel filter and reverse the removal procedures. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct any leaks immediately.
REAR

  1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle. Remove the left rear wheel.
  2. Remove the bolts securing the filter and its basket to the fuel tank.

  1. Push the fuel filter retaining tab and release it from the basket.

  2. Make certain the retaining tabs are engaged when the filter is installed in the holder. Tighten the bolts until snug.
  3. Install the left rear wheel. Lower the car to the ground.
  4. Start the engine and check for leaks. Correct any leaks immediately.
Fuel Injected Engines
See Figures 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12
The canister fuel filter is located in the engine compartment. When buying the new filter, also buy new washers for the banjo bolts and the service bolt. Failure to replace these washers invites high-pressure fuel leaks. Replacing the washers is required, not recommended.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. The fuel system is under pressure. Release pressure slowly and contain spillage. Observe "no smoking/no open flame" precautions. Have a Class B-C (dry powder) fire extinguisher within arm's reach at all times.
  3. Disconnect the banjo bolts and/or threaded fuel line fitting from the fuel filter. Use of a flare nut or line wrench is recommended for disconnecting and attaching this fitting.

  1. Loosen the fuel filter clamp bolt, then remove the filter.
To install:
  1. Install the new filter and secure the clamp bolt.
  2. The upper and lower washers on each banjo bolt and the washer on the service bolt MUST be replaced whenever the bolts are loosened. Install the washers and banjo bolts. Tighten the banjo bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm) on all models except 1992-95 Preludes. On these models, tighten the bolt to 20 ft. lbs. (28 Nm). If applicable, tighten the threaded fuel line fitting to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).

  1. Tighten the service bolt to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
  2. Start the engine and check for leaks. The engine may crank longer than normal until full fuel pressure is developed. Correct any leaks immediately.
