If the chain is on wrong it could cause damage on some cars. The pistons could hit the valves, for instance.
Be sure to line up the chain accurately. You could be off , but not more than about 6 degrees.
Hope this helps.

you kinda destroyed it. you need specialty tools, a good manual, and new parts. You don't do this right the first time, you bend valves, period.

SOURCE: My timing chain broke in my 2002 ford explorer

theres 3 sprokets stacked verticaly correct? the bottom shaft keyway should point straight up. the 2nd shaft keyway should point straight down. finally the top gear keyway should be pointing straight up. alittle mark on the gear teeth should match a mark on the lower gear teeth.

need to get back to basics, first check engine compression-you say that it's high mileage, so I'd start there-If you have uniform compression across the board, move on to fuel pressure at the top rail-if that is good, with spark it has to run, but make sure your distributor is properly installed (not out 180 degrees).

How to set timing on a 1985 Mercedes 300d

If the timing chain broke, the timing of the injection pump is likely off also. In order to time that correctly, you need to remove the pump. If you want to tackle that I'll send you more information about setting the basic timing of the pump.

Engine Timing is off in my 1998 Chevy Suburban

You have it in "position one"??? I wish I knew what you were talking about.... Ignition timing? valve timing? Getting the distributor installed correctly? Getting the timing chain installed correctly? WHICH ENGINE are we talking about? You do not even need to know the firing order to put a timing chain on most GM engines....what else did you mess with?

Timing chain broke replaced it now car runs rough. rechecked timing

Put a vacuum gauge on the intake manifold. (any port)...If the needle is bouncing, likely you have a bent valve. Some engines are "interference" but even those that aren't can still have a valve/piston collision if the chain (usually the top gear) fails. Also check firing order etc.

Turns over but won't fire

well the plastic piece are from the timing chain guides are either broken or ripped off,and the metal rattling was probably the timing chain,,i think the timing chain jmped or broke and broke the guides,if thats the car you most likely bent the valves in the head,,,i would remove the cam cover and the timing chain cover and see what you got,you may need a engine

Died while driving an won't restart

Sounds like the timing chain let go on you. You have fuel, you have fire, nothing really left, but to, get them to meet at the right time. Take the distributor cap off, turn the engine over, and if the rotor don't move, then you will know the chain went. It is possible that the chain could've jumped a tooth or two also, but I'm almost possitive that it broke. I sincerely hope that I could help. Good luck and best wishes.
