If your battery is fully charged, the car can start and run from the battery with no alternator at all. It might run 1/2 hr with no alternator.

A good test for the alternator is to start the car and then unhook one of the battery terminals. If the alternator is good, the car will keep on running without the battery. If the car turns off hen you disconnect a terminal, then the alternator isn't working.

But a bad alternator won't stop your car from starting...it will just not keep your battery charged or keep the motor running once the battery gets less than 12V

How do you check the alternator?

You will have to boost car and start.
With the engine on:
Step 1: Open your hood and so you have clear access to the car battery. Locate your alternator and check to be sure the alternator belt isn't loose. Step 2: Turn your multi-meter to the 20 V setting. Step 3: Start the engine. ...Step 4: check voltage output at battery post, on the meter it should show above 14 volts for good alternator

Alternator changed, now car will not start

Check cable between engine/gearbox and chasis, or bypass this cable during jump starting,by putting the - jump cable on the engine, if it starts your cable between engine and chasis has a bad connection.

Good luck

Daughter called me ..car wont start. checked battery at Autozone...it is good. someone stopped to help them and bang on startere and it starts up. Bad starter. Starter replaced. Next day daughter...

it sounds like you have blown fuse to the Alternator.. I don't know what car you are talking about but they charging systems vary.. But if alternator isn't getting all the power it needs it won't charge. this should be checked.

good luck

I can boost my car and it will run fine then I turn it off and it wont start again is it a battery that needs to be replaced

this sounds like a bad alternator, that is the job of the alternator besides powering your car after start up, the alternator should keep the battery charged, believe it or not cranking your car is the only job your battery has unless you just switch you ignition to accessory, once you start the car everything runs off the alternator , a quick test for the alternator is this , crank the car and very temporarily unhook the positive battery cable, if the car does'nt die after 2 or 3 seconds the the alternator is putting out a charge

Will not start battery and alternator is good will only start if jumped and shuts off while running after car is jumped started.

Make SURE battery and alternator are good because battery starts the car but car runs on alternator power once its started. If alternator is not putting out the power needed, car will die once the battery power is dead or removed.

Car will start with booster but stops running when removed

That sounds like either your alternator is bad which is causing the car to run off the battery or the battery isn't holding a charge.

Alternator

it is very rare when a bad alternator will stop a car from starting as the car will start and run until the battery runs out of juice however if it is shorted it could fry other components in the electral system. I am assuming you have already tried to jump start the car and it didnt start so if it is shorted then the welding is already done. check to see that the battery has juice and try to start the car more often than not if there is no turning or starting even while jumping its the ground wire on the batt or the frame thats loose. good luck
