It could be the air filter but I would first suspect the fuel filter. If it has been awhile since your last tuneup I would suggest doing one - including filters, oil, cap / rotor, wires and plugs. You're on the right track with your thinking - good luck!!
drain the exisiting tank down or run the vehicle to almost empty, disconnect the fuel line at the tank if possible while still hanging to body, if not, remove straps(this is why you want it almost empty) and gently lower the tank down and remove any remaining fuel lines
you may need special fuel line disconnect tools to remove the fuel lines and possibly a repair kit to fix the very common fuel filter steel line rusting solid to the fuel filter.
The fuel filter is located under the vehicle near the gas tank. Follow the fuel lines under the vehicle and you can't miss it. Rear center area of the car.
Good luck
Try looking under the car.
Follow the filler hose for the fuel tank.
Should be right along side. Bolted in with a strap.
Has quick disconnects.
You will spill gas be ready.
Angle of the can matters how much.
