There should be an override. Look in your owner's manual to find the procedure as most of them have it to be able to tow the vehicle.

Sounds like a possible pressure switch or related wiring.

I can go from park to drive without using the

Uuuh... No. There is an electrical link between the brake pedal and the transmission to prevent that from happening.
1. It keeps kids from pulling the lever out of park when they are too small to reach the pedals (first hand experience with that one back in the 60's!).
2. It keeps grownups from pulling it into gear with the engine revved up and crashing into things in parking lots and driveways.
3. Transmissions go from Park to Reverse, Neutral, then Drive. Without the brake on, there would be lots of excessive shocks to the transmission.

When I turn the ignition switch to start the vehicle I often cannot shift the stick shift out of Park. If I immediately try to switch gears after starting the engine it usually works but if I leave it more...

ok the safety feature on an auto gearbox is that the gear select has a solinoid lock on the shift & you norm have to start engine first before you can select drive now if the engine is running & not allowing you to select a drive then for some reason the solinoid is losing its signal or going faulty or even the shaft needing a little lube IE: wd40 now my volvo won't even allow me to take the key out untill its in park hope this helps

Jetta parking brake

Your car should have an E-brake engage/release lever. Please inspect the push button on the end of the lever. Does the button depress and release correctly? My guess is that the lever needs to be repaired or replaced. Maybe the internal spring has broke and the button wont release. If the button doesn't release, the ratchet wont engage. Write back and let me know what you found or if you have other questions, good luck.

97 Maxda Protege starter engages automaticly in park or neutral with key in ON position

You've pretty much answered your own question, although I doubt it's demons...LOL. Ign switch, nuetral safety or park switch, shorted starter, could be chaffed wiring. If your in the ON position and the starter engages, I'd be looking at the ign wire from the switch to the starter solenoid and or relay. Your car is 20 years old so anything is possible at this point. Your best bet is to go to ALLDATA>COM and buy the wiring schematics for your car grab a DVM and start checking your circuits.

I can put my 1994 toyota tercel in gear without pushing in the clutch, what could the problems be?

Do you mean with the engine off? If so, that is normal. The clutch just allows you to disconnect from engine when it running. With the clutch released and engine running the gears are spinning all the time. When in neutral, the chain of gears to the final drive is incomplete. When you engage a gear you are completing a chain of gear connections to the wheels. If engine is running, you will grind gears untill you press clutch, making a temporary break in the chain, allowing the gears to stop spinning and you to engage one.

You can infact use 1st gear as a kind of parking brake as it holds the car from rolling (in most cases) , with engine OFF, - BUT this is not advised as the only parking brake.

Van gets stuck in park from time to time

In all newer cars there is a safety feature that will not let the vehicle come out of park unless the brake is depressed. There is a wire that pulls the safety release on the gear shift so you can put the van in gear. You might need to have that checked. This is not an uncommon problem, but the safety features like this have prevented young children from knocking vehicles out of gear. Go to your local garage and see if you can get this fixed. If you have kids I stress that you not go at this alone, let the professionals help. Good luck.

Won't shift out of park unless brake engaged first

This is a common safety feature on most newer vehicles(90 and above). There are some older Toyota cars you can hear the safety lock click at the shifter when you press the brake.

Its there for obvious reasons, but the best is so that a child cannot put a a parked vehicle in gear by accident...and weve all seen people leave the car running before..and leave a kid in there.
