I have a 2010 Buick Lacrosse that had the P0420 code. Replaced the Bank One Cat and the code and the check engine light came on again with the same code.

Garage cleared it again and now its back on again with the same code????? How do I get this resolved? This has occurred within a week of driving approx. 150 miles after the new cat was installed.

Did they use an original equipment cat from the dealer or an aftermarket one? Aftermarket cats can cause more problems than they fix. There very few that I will personally install.

are they monitoring downstream O2 sensor data to see if the O2 sensor may be biased high? If the cat is doing its job the downstream O2 sensors will read a lower voltage. Tricking the vehicle into running rich or lean will cause this voltage to change ( unplugging a coil will cause the Downstream O2 to read high as the cat tries to burn off the extra fuel. Unplugging a fuel injector will cause the downstream O2 sensor to read low as extra air is being pushed thought the cats). Making sure the downstream O2 sensors are capable of switching should be part of the diagnostics.

Are you sure they replace the right cat? There are 5 different engine options for this car. If you let me know what engine you have I can let you know what bank is bank 1.

Gmc acadia p0420 after replacing 02sensors which catalytic converter is p0420 p0420

wow no year car told. now that is a Hard row to hoe.. 2007 to NOW.
no engine told and cats are designed for engine and smog ,in one countries laws.
reset the all DTC errors via button on scan tool;
then drive see if P0420 comes back, first
not buy $400 cat on a whim./
I roll the dice, see 10, 2010
and answer. and LY7 engine V6 (there are others)

DTC P0420: Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 1
DTC P0430: Catalyst System Low Efficiency Bank 2

bank 1 means , that bank that contains cylinder #1
where is cylinder #1 it on all V engines, that cylinder that is MOST forward.
all cyl 1 are offset front

never post about cars and no year or engine told or post #8th digit of VIN this is engine code, so answer and be correct. (USA answer me only)

Fix a P0420 code in my 2010 Nissan Sentra Base model. I am wondering if I could have gotten the check engine light with that code due to an engine failure?

as you have a new and clean from any carbon built up engine, and a old cat which is covered in carbon and other nasty stuff ,it could try to get the fuel mixture correct but is getting misleading signals from cat, get a fuel addative that specificaly cleans the cat and try that to see if lightclears, also clear code before running with the addative and check codes again after

Where is the O2sensor bank 1 at with a code of P0420. AND do I need to replace both sensors upstream and down. Or just the one that is showing up on the obd scanner.

Bank one is front side of cat. It should also tell u if it's cat 1 or cat 2. Depending on make an modle an yr. Catalyst 1 bank 2 is left cat back sensor. Catalyst 2 bank 2 is right cat back sensor. U do not have to replace upstream also. My o2 sensor Catalyst 2 bank 2 went bad. Had engine code for burning rich bank 2. Replaced tha down stream sensor an fixed problem runs better an better gas. This was in 97 gmc suburban. Idk what vehicle ur askin about. An I'm not to familiar with much about cars jus trucks an suvs.

420 code with a check engine light

Code 420 means the O2 sensors are telling the computer the catalytic converter on bank one is not working correctly. Bank one is on the side with cylinder one.
The problem could be the cat, or one of the sensors, or a fuel mixture problem such as a vac leak in the engine or injector problem.
The sensors would need to be tested.

1998 buick century code p0420

code p 0420 refers to cat converter system bank 1---efficiency below threshold====causes ---cat converter---wiring---HO2S (heated oxygen sensor, the one in the exhaust manifold before the cat converter)
code p 0300 is random misfires
I would suggest changing the HO2S as it reports to the ECM on exhaust content so that the ECM can adjust the air/fuel ratio
so it is logical that if that unit is not reporting correctly, the cat converter may be having trouble burning off the gasses correctly
The oxygen sensor(O2S) reads the results of the cat converter operation and helps fine tune the ECM settings

Replaced cat. convertor at a muffler shop cost about $150.00 and still have code P0420 and now have more codes (C1214 and C1248) and abs light, service engine light and traction light is on. Took to...

code p 0420 refers to cat converter system bank 1-efficiency below threshold ====causes --cat converter---wiring ---Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) in the manifold before the cat converter
as the cat converter is new , that will not be an option as for the rest if the codes were not prior to the cat replacement , I would suspect wire harness problems from the cat fitment
possible to use a scan tool to reset the ECm
