My 2001 malibu just started making a loud grinding noise under the hood and also makes a srubbing noise when i turn right or left. what could this be all of a sudden

It just started making the noises about 5 hours ago. Both the scrubbing and the grinding. This is the coldest day so for at 16 degrees. Could cold weather be the culprit?

A build up of snow and ice in the wheel wells

Testimonial: "my question was regarding a chev. Malibu. Not a blazer. There is no snow or ice. I'm sorry, are there any other possible explanations. I need to know if it is safe to drive until the problem is solved. Any other possible answers will be greatly appreciated."

2001 malibu humms and makes noise when turning left but not the turning right

This is typical of a wheel bearing that is going out. I would imagine that it is your right front, but it could be either side. It is a safety issue as it helps to hold your wheel to your car so get it to a mechanic quickly.

Loud grinding noise front end while driving. Hub bearing? Started a few weeks ago but not so extreme and usual only when turning. Now it is a loud metal grinding sound almost constant and seems to get...

Probably so. When making a left hand turn, if the noise gets loader, it is the right side bearing. IE... putting more wieght on that side of the car.

Loud grinding noise under hood, oil like substance on a belt, Power Steering Stiff, has PS fluid

Almost sound like your rack and pinion cylinder has gone bad. I would start by cleaning the area real well to get rid of the oil. With the car running have someone sit inside and turn the wheels from left to right while you stand and watch to see if you can see oil leaking and from where and also to see if you can tell where the grinding is coming from. Please do not try to clean the engine with it running as you will get burned from heat and your clothes may become tangled in moving parts.

I hear a loud grinding noise when i drive my car

Check front tyres & wheel bearings espesially the R/H/F. Feel tyre for high / low spots on inside & jack up & spin wheel if you get noise while jacked up it is not the tyres but wheel bearing or brake pads but more than likly a crook bearing by the sound of it. It needs to be tended to ASAP

I took my 2005 Chev. Malibu in for an oil change and now it is making a loud noise from the engine. they say its the water pump? is that possible?

  • Hi, I can help.
  • When your water pump goes bad it will begin to grind. I had one I let got far to long and it sounded deafening when I opened the hood. You can open your hood and listen and see for yourself. The water pump is on the belt line, left side under the hood, last pulley toward the rear.
  • Now if your asking can an oil change effect the water pump? No, not at all. Water pumps go sporadically.
  • It would be odd that you heard no noises before the oil change and now the water pump is loud enough to take notice after the oil change. The bearings usually go a little slower than that.

  • I would be interested in some more of the details to this. And what your overall concerns are. I'd be happy to further. help. Otherwise get a second opinion on your cars condition.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

My 2001 bmw 325 cic started making an awful grinding noise today when moving the steering wheel at all to the left or right. Can also hear the noise under the hood.

It sounds like your car is low on power steering fluid. When the power steering fluid is low, the power steering pump is running dry, which makes a grinding or moaning sound. Check the power steering fluid level and top up if necessary. It should be on the left side of the engine compartment. Your owners manual should have the exact location of the power steering reservoir, and what type of power steering fluid to use.
Good luck
Matt
