Rochelle, are you asking this question so that you are armed with information when you bring it to a mechanic/transmission specialist? Or is this something you want to do on your own?
The vehicles of today are not designed for the beginner or even intermediate skilled do-it-yourselfer.
It is extremely involved and requires a lot of mechanical knowledge, tools, and equipment to perform the task.
The process is not even close to being simple as it was with earlier model cars...and one cannot describe the removal and installation process on this forum as though it were 5 or even in 10 easy steps. You'll actually need the full service manual.
The very reason why repair shops charge big money is because of the time consuming steps it takes to remove the transmission from the engine in order to access the torque converter; like removing frame or exhaust cross members; disassembling linkages, electronic harnesses, transmission hydraulic lines; draining fluids and in some applications, having to remove the engine from its mounts in order to move the engine forward to gain clearance to drop the transmission. Checking & observing the fluid for discoloration, smell, and metal debris; so on & so forth. And of course, the re-installation process and having the proper electronic equipment to test & reset the transmission, if necessary.
You have to remove the gear box from the engine first.
