SOURCE: idles poorly , and its like its starving for fuel or air

1. Vacuum leaks. Check all mounting bolts at the intake, check all hoses by wiggling them around. Listen with stethoscope or a length of fuel hose held up to your ear with engine running. You will be looking for a hissing sound. 2. Check egr valve. 3. Check air filter. 4. Check timing belt. ( you will need a timing light) If the mark is jumping around, your belt has jumped. If it stays basically in one place, it's good. 5. Check camshaft lobes. 6. Valves burnt or leaking. 7 Dirty or clogged injectors. 8 . Faulty idle control system.

SOURCE: my 2001 ford focus runs erratic it idles rough and

I had this with our Renault Espace, Also coming out of the exhaust pipe was a black liquid of some sort, NOT OIL, more like a tar substance. I took it to Renault and it ended up being the Lambda Sensor in the exhaust manifold down pipe, It is located before the Catalytic Convertor in the exhaust system. I hope this is useful, It`s just a thought, Ian

If there is no decal under the hood somewhere, start with the belt around the crankshaft, and then go flats to flats, ribs to ribs. You may have to try a couple of times, but you'll get it.

2001 Ford Focus. It is running rough and power surges.

Clean Throttle Body (both sides, not just what you can see) and MAF (mass air flow sensor) [spray and shake to dry].

2001 ford focus se sedann idle to high

How high is the idle? Any roughness? Some ideas who by the control the butterfly valve on the throttle, or the MAF (mass airflow sensor)

Rough idle problem

This could be due to a bad MAF sensor or an Oxygen sensor. Also, take your car for a compression test to make sure there are not any vacuum leaks.

My idle is low on my 2001 ford focus se and it is a stick shift so my car dies when I come to a stop unless I have my foot on the gas just a bit. how can I turn up the idle? Help please.

The idle is computer controlled. It takes a reading from the crankshaft position sensor as well as the camshaft position sensor along with basic information from other sensors, processes it and sends a pulse signal to the intake air control valve (IAC). The IAC valve is positioned to allow air to bypass the throttle plate and control the idle. Once the throttle is opened the IAC is commanded on 100% until the throttle is closed. In short, a scan of the pids needs to be done to determine whether the processor is commanding the IAC on properly or if the IAC just isn't responding properly.

A scan for codes can be done but many times an IAC won't throw a code so the sensor pids really need to be performed to determine the root cause.Good luck.
