The number 1 cylinder is located at the rear left of the engine, looking from front to back of the vehicle.

Misfiring cylinder3 '99 Toyota Avalon how to troubleshoot?

Hello, a very common problem for cylinder misfires are the ignition coil packs, remove the spark plug and replace the plugs if necessary then replace the coil pack if the misfire persists, the #3 cylinder it at the cylinder head near the firewall and is the one in the middle of the head.

Hello Janet, those codes are 300=misfire cylinder #1 , 301= misfire cylinder #2, 302 =misfire #3 cylinder, it sounds like a bad coil pack but I don't know what motor you have or I could give more info. sorry
Woody. hope this helped you.

Coil pack connection is physical: Coil 1 to Cylinder 1, 2->2, etc.

I am not sure if this is your question, but firing order matches spark to TDC (top dead center) on the power stroke. The design of the crankshaft determines this.

1-3-4-2 is common for most straight 4's. Cylinder 1 is closest to the crank pulley. I believe your coils are 'waste spark' which means it will fire two cylinders at the same time. When the coil fires, one cylinder is on the power stroke and is wanting this spark. The other cylinder is on the exhaust stroke at this time, and thus the spark is 'wasted' on that cylinder. But a cylinder with exhaust gas has high impedance, so most of the energy is delivered to the intended cylinder.

If your question was 'should I just connect 1->1, 2->2, 3->3, 4->4' [ yes!] vs. ' should I try to connect coils following the firing order' [no] then the answer is the first. The trigger wheel determines which coilpack fires when, you just need to hook up the wires number for number.

Where is the ignitor at on my Avalon? The piece looks simple and I cannot find it. The code says ingnitor 1st bank, thanks, Carl

if it has 6 coil packs then it is on the head next to firewall and #1 cylinder is the one next to timing cover and pcv valve.if it only has 3 coil packs on the front head then follow the plug wire from #1 to to coil on front head and you will have the right one but remember to look at the plug, wire, and coil boot before you replace the coil pack. the igniter is made into the coil pack.
