Fuel additive
It is a warning that something drastic has happened in either the engine or transmission.
check all fluid levels including the coolant at the radiator cap. check for overheating
Have the fault codes read before driving it anywhere.
If the check engine light flashes it could be something vary important you might want to check that before driving it.

To rebuild without pulling the engine you will have to remove most of the front body ( grille , radiator, intercooler, etc.)

duramax diesel trucks do not have a lift pump. start with the simple things make sure your fuel filter is tight and check the shreader vlave on the fuel rail if that don't help check the filter housing for a leaks arround the heater element or a crack in the housing itself
