SOURCE: Hyundai Overdrive wont engage
It is not suggested strip and twist wires. Better take it to an authorized service station to check what causes the problem.Is it OVERDRIVE SWITCH or CRUISE CONTROL MODULE faulty?
Over drive switch has three points. (5 to 4 selects "ON" or 5 to 6 selects "OFF").
Right click on following schematic, "save picture as" to a location in your PC so you have a ZOOM IN view.

there is an sensor on the speed odmeter cable on the side of transmission. it will kill thr overdrive and cruise control but not the speedometer. about $50.fixed 2 explorers that way

i bet it just started doing this when the weather changed,some transmissions have an internal thermostat and will not go into overdrive until a certain temp when starting from a cold start,you might also want to consider a trans service,hope this helps

over drive is a gear its self it may be going out in the trany so when that over drive button it pushed it thorws it in to that gear that may be out no and it dont matter is you try to sift because it is a gear its self my car is 4 speed drive 1 drive 2 drive (3 gear) and overdrive (4th gear)
possibly wrongly adj shift linkage and you push on it slightly when you are pushing the button

In particular: at what speed are you trying to deselect Overdrive OFF? How do you know that the top gear is no being selected with overdrive-Off turned off? Is it manual or automatic? Are you in automatic mode of select speed mode?
