You can use 10w40 or 10w30 with out a problem...
It's usually best to use the specified weight in your vehicle though it won't hurt if you use a slightly different number weight oil, just plan on going back the the original rated oil on your next change.
The number before the 'W' is the 'cold' viscosity rating of the oil, and the number after the 'W' is the 'hot' viscosity rating.
Also, the higher numbers mean that it is thicker and maintains it lubricating properties. The lower the number the thinner it is, so if you live in a really cold climate you might want to change to a lower number in the winter, and back to the original viscosity oil in the summer.
