Tire rods are relatively cheap but the whirring got me worrying. This could be a CV joint. Make sure your tire pressure is equal on all tires. This will help any stress put on the CVjoint & possible reduce the whirring or even stop it! If not you may be in for more than you bargained for, a CVjoint & other front end parts. Good luck!

This sounds like a bad CVjoint or axle I would either have them both replaced or find the faulty one and replace it.
