Sounds like tach needs to be reprogrammed. You will need to check and see if tach is hooked up. It is purple and white wire and goes from remote starter to the coil or fuel injector. If it is hooked up then there will be a button connected to remote starter the has two wires in a blue plug. This is programming switch plug. After locating button that plugs into the connector, then just start vehicle and hold button for 5 seconds. This will reprogram tach signal in starter. This should allow the remote to now disengage the starter once vehicle has started.

wow defauts to spin, the will kill a few people, i bet. Viper needs to get the act together, (like factory installed remote start do) if car is in gear, and this thing does that, you will get , injury claims.

my guess is owner lost the instructions, i posted them , (link) no need to past them in, the instructions are clear, and may vary by model (i refused to read them all) but do read the manual your YOUR model, then ask questions, on steps that are not clear, we do that great. and questions on why tachometer signals fail on many cars,(answer vast numbers of spark systems on cars, )

1998 Cherokee?
wow , old bendix starters ,they are long long gone, (done many)
a blast from the past. LOL
so is this an after market hacked in Remote?>
sure.
well buy a new system and read the instructions.
if using an old system , get the instructions online, at makers web site, we can not guess makers, of anything aftermarket.

it hangs up the starter solenoid, , and is very dangerous to you , like that. sure.
my guess is the control (in car) is bad, shorted relay in box or transistor that drives the small wire to the starter, or to cars starter relay .

the starter relay is in the USA PDC fuse box.
all answers USA , not export jeeps, this is a USA forum (calif)

My Honda accord (+200 000 miles) starts with no problems in the morning but then if you turn it off after driving for while it wont start and wont crank, any ideas?

If the humming noise is more like a whirring sound, you have a bad starter-motor solonoid or "bendix."

First - open the hood and have one of you listen while the other tries the starter. If the starter motor makes a whirring sound but nothing else happens, it is certainly the "bendix."

The same switch that turns the motor on, also engages an electro-magnet (the bendix) that throws the starter motor gear out and engages the teeth in the motors flywheel thus allowing the electric starter motor to turn the engine over. When the engine starts, it spins the starter motor fast enough that it mechanically throws the starter gear back into the starter even before you release the starter and disengage the magnet.

OK - now that you know what it is, what do you do about it.

While the bendix can sometimes be cleaned and work a while longer, sometimes a really long time longer, it is seldom worth the effort to remove the starter mechanism, take it apart, clean and lubricate (with the proper lubricants) and re-install just to see if that will work.

Usually, the best solution is a new or rebuilt starter. You can get one on Amazon, Autozone, NAPA, etc. and the price will likely vary a lot. You can get one from the dealer as well but it may cost more than the car (some exaggeration). Check prices - they vary a lot, sometimes by as much as 2-3x. I think the original starter motor on your car is a Denso, but there are lots of good aftermarket starters available.

Starters are pretty easy to change. I suggest looking on youtube. Just make absolutely sure you disconnect your battery before starting this.

Changing the starter motor (the bendix is attached and comes with a rebuilt one) takes about 30 minutes or so on that car.

Basically, you disconnect the wires, unbolt the old one, slide it out, slide in the new one, bolt in in, and reconnect the wires. - then reconnect the battery and start the car.

Good luck.

On start up there is a noise sounding like something is engaging

Nothing should engage when the engine starts running. The torque converter and transmission pump will spin faster, but not make noise. If they do it wont go away. If the noise is there as the engine start running on it's own. I would guess it is the starter bendix not disengaging after you let off the key. This would entail a new starter. Beings that you have a 98, you might be able to get just the bendix. But you have to take the starter apart to replace it. It's what push the gear forward.

Starter will not disengage after

It sounds like the "bendix drive" is gone in your starter. This is the assembly that engages and disengages the starter to the engine. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the starter. Hope this helps.

88F250 4x4 5.8L FI 5 speed. A friend has this & the starter went out. I replaced it & the solenoid. No big deal right? I returned it & the next day he called me & told me that the...

Its a solenoid...it engages the bendix and truck starts...bendix should retract because power to it gets shut off by ignition switch going to "run".

Only way bendix would stay engaged or get a signal to keep turning ???
Bad contacts in ignition switch...maybe ??
Start relay in under hood power distribution panel has hot or welded contacts ?

I've gotta think about this one...hope this gives some help...
