How does one the change the lowbeam headlight bulb, 1997 bmw 740il

the headlight bulb is both high /low beams and has a twist off black retainer that keeps the bulb in (DO NOT TOUCH THIS BULB WITH YOUR FINGERS THE OIL FROM YOUR SKIN WILL FRY ON THE GLASS AND BLOW OUT THE BULB IN AN HOUR OR LESS IF IT DOES HAPPEN CLEAN WITH ALCOHOL AND LET DRY) USE PAPER TOWELS/RUBBER GLOVE OR ANYTHING CLEAN TO HANDLE THE NEW BULB REVERSE REMOVAL PROCEDURE

Check that you have got the correct bulb for the one you replace . They both look the same but one has a single filiment for high beam only while the other will have 2 filiments for both high and low beam. If you are usin quartz halogen will be H1 the other will be H4

remove upper air intake splash shield.remove the headlight housing retaining bolts and pull the housing assembly out to access the bulbs.rotate bulb holder counterclockwise to remove bulbs.WARNING YOU NEED TO WEAR CLEAN GLOVE TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS BECAUSE THEY ARE HALOGEN BULBS. IF YOU TOUCH HALOGEN BULBS WITH BARE HANDS. OILS FROM SKIN WILL CAUSE HALOGEN BULBS TO OVERHEAT BLOW OUT SO WEAR CLEAN DRY GLOVES.

There is no up or down side to the bulb

Pretty straight forward. Open hood. Pull up on plastic cover over the headlight your going to fix. Low beam is the outside bulb. Rotate bulb counter clockwise ~1/4 turn and pull out. Reverse procedure to replace. Nuttin' to it!! Make sure that the old bulb comes out with an o-ring at the base. I usually have to remove it manualy. The new bulbs have new o-rings attatched.

I am assuming that you have a burned out head light bulb.
1) Open hood.
2) Working in back of headlight assembly, grasp rear of bulb socket (harness connector) and turn counterclockwise 90 degrees. Pull bulb out of headlight assembly.
3) Disconnect harness connector from bulb (gently pry, it's plastic)
4) Installation is reverse of removal. (Do not touch halogen bulb with bare skin-oils from hand will cause bulb to burn out.) Align tabs on bulb base to cutouts on rear of lens assembly. (Note bottom tab is wider than other two) Secure bulb by rotating clockwise 90 degrees.
