I have a 1999 Toyota Avalon XE. I looked online but I haven't been able to find this answer for my car.
The door will not open probably because the spring at the door hinge is broken or missing
try removing the trim in the boot and you will see wherr the cable is for the lock mechanism, It is either screwed in but I am thinking that it will be held in by plastic clip../ Press the edges of the plastic together and push the mechanism into the fuel compartment. This will allow the catch to move around . have some one hold the lever up and use your fingers or a flat bladed screwdriver ( gently so as not to damage the paint) pry open the door. There should be a "z" shaped flat spring around the hinge that flips open the door when you pull the lever.
The part will be available from toyota only and if mitsubishi is any gauge around $3-$5.00
