Check fluid level and condition. If it smells burnt or is not a healthy red, then do change the fluid and filter. If it still does not work properly after the fluid and filter change, you will need to have the transmission looked at by a good transmission shop.

Will not shift out first gear

I assume this is an automatic?
If the shift linkage is not damaged (jammed or disconnected the usual answer is the governer valve in the transmission is sticking.
The fix for this normally involves pulling the trans out stripping it apart cleaning the governer valve new seals gaskets and reassembling.
(translated lots of money) try using a auto trans flush to clean all the gunk out of the transmission. Run the trans through all the gears with the trans flush and try driving it (only short distance test drive as its not proper trans fluid) see if you can get it out of first gear (flatten the gas pedal and let the engine go to max revs on short bursts) once it shifts once or twice go back and remove the trans flush fluid and replace with correct specification auto trans fluid I would also change the transmission filter at this point if it was mine .

2001 chevy 2500 hd 4x2 allison trans seems to loose pressure after coming to a stop, have to rev engine for a few seconds before it pulls again, whats up with that? 88800 miles

I would start
by changing both trans filters and fluid, makesure you put dex VI in trans then if still having problems take to someone with a Tech 2 scanner and have them reset the trans adapts and try that, what it does is resets trans to factory (new) mode and then as you drive the truck it will adjust to your driving habits and shift points, but loosing pressure makes me think one of your filters is partially plugged...there is a spin on cartridge and the internal one in pan, change em both..good luck

Change transmission oil

Get a drain pan that you can close up and take to a auto parts store and re-cycle after you are finished. Drain the transmission by removing the plug or removing all the bolts that hold it up. Hexagon shaped plug. Remove it first, that will be less messy. The filter should be changed along with the pan gasket. Do not use very much sealer when replacing the gasket, only enough to hold it in place while you install it. It is a good idea to put a couple of the bolts in the pan to keep the gasket in place too while you hold it up to the trans. Also, make sure you clean the old gasket off the pan and transmission. And do not over-tighten the bolts when installing. Look in your owners manual for the transmission fluid capacity, but do not add the whole amount at first. Probably add a least 4 or 5 quarts, then start the motor, shift the trans. back and forth a few times and then let the engine get to normal temperature. You want to check the fluid level when the car is in park and warm. Trans. fluid expands when heated. After warm up, check the level and add slowly to bring the level to the proper place. Do not overfill. Better to have a little less, then go drive the car, shift it back and forth, get it good and warm and check the level again. And check for leaks around the gasket. The trans. will drain for quite a while and when you pull the filter off, more will come out. What does your owner's manual say about how often the fluid needs changed? I think these highlander can go quite a while in between changes unless it is used in severe conditions, so check the manual to be sure. take care and good luck

I have a 1993 Tracker and the auto. transmission when it goes into 3rd gear slips for a while. When the tranie warms up it's O K. So when it slips I pull it back into 2nd until it warms up enough. What do...

Check trans fluid with engine running - if low, top off. If fluid level is fine then try changing the transmission filter located inside the transmission pan. You may also have an issue with dirty trans fluid - if it is not pinkish but brown then have a transmission power flush done, then change filter.

Transmission , trans is slipping after it warms up, or after few miles, can it be my filter dirty? or do you think it needs to be replaced or rebuilt? rb

For any auto transmission always think basic solution, in this case change the filter, replace with new fluid, Sure repair shops want to replace the entire unit, why more money. a new trans will fix the problem. but so might a filter and fluid change do the trick for alot less money. New trans costs 2500.00 filter and fluid 50.00. you do the math

I have a 2002 Honda Accord with Auto Trans. I

i would check the transaxle fluid first, if it is fine, I would then take it and change the fluid and filter. if this does not correct it, quite possibly the transaxle is faulty, sorry, I hope that the fluid corrects it for you, thanks

Tran warms up, then problem getting out of 1st gear

Depending on who serviced it. Was it a reputable place? If the fluid and filter were definately changed, your tranny is going out. Just wear and tear with those kind of miles. Hope it helps

1988 s10 transmission

if you drive it to much you will cause it to burn up, but to check the fluid level drive some to warm up( engine temp should be about half way (and you should reach 50mph) the park with it running(has to be running) and pull the tranny dipstick to check fluid level
if the trans and engine are cold it wont read the correct level

it will slip if the fluid is low

Well, that is a good sign there were no chunks in the pan.I would pull the codes out of the computer. You will need someone with a scan tool that will hook up to your vehicle, and access the diagnostic trouble codes.Once the code is identified, that gives a narrower area to look at.Yes on the fluid and filter, basically. The flush removes all of the old trans fluid, while changing the fluid and filter is changing about half the fluid, but that's just fine too.
