SOURCE: crankshaft position sensor location

Hello. One way to check if it is working is when you try to start the car does the needle move on you tac? If not then your crank sensor is more then likely the problem. It is located on the backside of the engine under the intake manifold. If is in about the center of the block. There will be a 10mm bolt holding the sensor in. If you decide to change it yourself (not to terrible of a job) unplug the sensor, remove the bolt and spin it back and forth slightly while pulling it out. It may be stoburn and you might have to work at it for a little bit (not a done of room) but it will come. When it's out the sensor will be shaped kind of like an L. I have changed a few of these over time and they can be a little stoburn. To install just reverse the process.

Its not unusual for the crankshaft sensor to intermittanly fail. The crank sensors are not real expensive and are not extremely hard to change.
The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is mounted into the engine block above the starter motor. Engine speed and crankshaft position are provided through the crankshaft position sensor. The sensor generates pulses that are the input sent to the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM interprets the sensor input to determine the crankshaft position. The PCM then uses this position, along with other inputs, to determine injector sequence and ignition timing. The sensor is a Hall effect device combined with an internal magnet. It is also sensitive to steel within a certain distance from it.
Below is a pic of the sensor location.
Good luck.

SOURCE: How to get at the

First, you will need to jack up the driver side front wheel.
Then, remove the wheel.
With the wheel off, you can remove the plastic fasteners holding the battery access panel (bottom front section of inner wheel well).
After you remove the cover you can reach in and disconnect the cables, then remove the battery.

Hope this helps!

you need to the vehicle scanned for trouble code. this is done through the OBDll port. Usually autozone or O'Reilly will do it. You can then take codes and google them for answers. an example p0032. All codes are on line and free. No one can tell you without scanning vehicle and you are the only one there

2010 dodge journey 3.5 liter stays in open loop mode all the time runs horrible

To go into closed loop the computer needs to see engine coolant at operating temperature and rapidly changing oxygen sensor signals. So check the O2 sensor readings. The sensors have a built in heater so they can start reading faster. If the heater isn't working, they'll be slow to read. Also, a stuck open thermostat can delay closed loop
