Under your truck a the side of the transmission you will see a cable that goes into it. . the cable has a cap screw or a little fork with a bolt holding it in. remove cap or fork then pull out speedo unit and you will see a cable with a square at the end . With your fingers spin it and see if the cable spins freely, if so have a helper look at the speedo and see if the needle is moving when you spin. If not your cable is broken or stuck. If it does not spin stuck, lube it. if it spins but the speedo does not move replace the cable. Hope this helps. MIkel

sounds like the coil spring for the speedometer needle is bad. you can replace it or buy a new instrument cluster. Look at local salvage yards for cheaper price.

My speedometer won't go above 40 mph.

check out both (output and input speed sensors), as well as (both connectors); do this first. Next, remove instrument cluster, and replace coil-spring that operates speedometer needle ( has tendancy to go back at anytime).

The speedometer on my 04 gmc sierra is stuck reading speed about 40 mph over actual speed? can it be reset?

Sadly, no. What has happened is that the tiny servo motor that moves the speedometer needle is failing. When I run into these we remove the dash assembly and send it out to be repaired, usually by a dealer although there are other companies that can do this too. Usually they replace all the servo motors and backlight bulbs during the repairs but make sure you ask if they do so just to be sure.

Boss has 2005 Yukon, says speedometer shows random numbers (ie, 40 mph while stopped or 40 mph when doing 60. Intermittent problem sometimes fine.) Any helpful hints appreciated.

The speedo in electronic and can have various circuit board problems. I've had to cars with erratic speedos and in both cases the dealer said replace them and big buck bills. I found a shop that repairs them and charges $100 buck and free shipping back. About a 4 day turnaround.

GMC sierra speedometer stuck at 40mph

There was not a recall, but there was a class action settlement where GM agreed to extend the warranty on certain vehicles for this problem. Check www.gmspeedometerrecall.com to see if you qualify.

Speedometer is jumping around

The speedometer cable needs lubricating. It can be removed from the bottom where it connects to transmission, coated with graphite and reinstalled.

Is the vehicle fitted with oversized wheels? if so, try recommended tyre and wheel sizes.
