Replaced 1 brake line that blew out. I tried to bleed the system and both rear and drivers front will not let any fluid out. The passage front is the only caliper that will bleed or work to stop the truck. This is a 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 4×4 z71. Any help please.

Replace the hoses. One in back for both rear brakes and one on each caliper. They deteriorate on the inside and clog up.

Try a clean and adjust on the rear shoes, because sometimes when they aren't properly adjusted they won't seem to work properly. Also there is a common "squishy" petal feeling after brake work on most all larger GM's around that year, wich I have run into several times. Try test driving it, and put a couple miles on it, That usualy helps.

Have someone push & release pedal while at wheel with problem. See if it takes a while or slow to release. If yes, have wrench ready on bleeder screw, and try again, if it sticks/holds, crack bleeder screw, if it releases, I'd replace hose.

I use a vacuum pump to bleed lines stating pass rear drivers rear pass front then drivers front. ensure the the brake fluid reservoir never goes lo low, or you will introduce air into system. Purchase plenty of fluid and draw out all the old fluid. It will be replaced by new fluid. Sound like you have air in system

When trying to bleed the brakes on a 1998 ford windstar, i get pressure on the passenger front and driver rear, but not on the passenger rear or the driver front. Why?

Sounds like the safety valve is not centered in its fixture. What happens is the system has diagonal braking control which is used to prevent the complete loss of brake fluid. This shuts off the wheel that is losing pressure from complete fluid pressure loss One front wheel and one diagonally opposed rear wheel are used so that the car will not pull left or right when stopping.

The situation may clear if you attempt to bleed the brakes using the longest line first and progress to the shortest line last.

Rear passenger brake dosen't work

Are there two brake fluid reservoirs? And are both full? This would be a split-diagonal brake system-front driver and rear passenger are one brake system. Front passenger and rear driver are the other system. You have the one system working-the front passenger and rear driver side works. You will have to keep bleeding the rear passenger side and the front driver side-always start farthest from the master cylinder, but if that wheel just won't bleed air out, make sure the driver front is working and bleeds good. If all else fails, there are pressure bleeder kits available, I don't know the cost, but they work great. They are also a one man bleeding job, as I understand.

Brake pedal soft after changing pads and bleeding brakes

You will need to bleed the brake system. I would start with the rear brakes lines and work towards the front.You must have key off engine off when bleeding brakes, apply pressure on brake pedal 10 times and hold. The brake line is now ready to be open. Open and let the stream of fluid come out and close the line tight. Then release brake pedal once bleeder screw is close. This procedure must be repeated twice front and back. After, brakes have been bleed pump the brake pedal before putting in drive.
Note: Don't let the resevoir run low on brake fluid. This will cause air bubbles to accumulate on the brake system. Always top off before opening bleeder screw.

If I remove a break line from one caliper for replacement, do I need to bleed the breaks on all four wheels or only the one that I have replaced the break line on?

When replacing any brake components it's always a great idea to bleed the brakes. Because your life depends on the serviceability of your brake system. When you open, crack or brake any line in your brake system, you automaticity introduce air into the system. Air can be compressed easily as opposed to brake fluid, which is designed not to compress as well as resist heat. The air in your system will cause your ABS and sensors to malfunction and or not work at all. When bleeding your brake system use this sequence start with: 1)right rear, 2)left rear, 3)front right, 4)front left. All vehicle parts and locations are referred to as the vehicle's left and right sides. Or as your setting in the drivers seat. Hope that helps.

you may have air trapped in the ABS EHCU. Did you use this procedure?

Bleeding the EHCU

Bleeding the EHCU requires the use of the TECH-1 scanner or its equivalent and the appropriate cartridge. Additionally, 3 tools, J-39177 or equivalent, are required. Bleeding cannot be performed without this equipment.
The EHCU must be bled after replacement or if air is trapped within the unit. It must be bled after bleeding the master cylinder and before bleeding the individual wheel circuits.
The Internal Bleed Valves on either side of the unit must be opened 1 / 4 - 1 / 2 turn before bleeding begins. These valves open internal passages within the unit. Actual bleeding is performed at the two bleeders on the front of the EHCU module. The bleeders must not be opened when the system is not pressurized. The ignition switch must be OFF or false trouble codes may be set.
  1. Open the internal bleed valve 1 / 4 - 1 / 2 turn each.
  2. Install one tool J-39177 on the left bleed stem of the EHCU. Install one tool on the right bleed stem and install the third tool on the combination valve.
  3. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder, filling if needed.
  4. Slowly depress the brake pedal and hold it down.
  5. Open the left bleeder on the front of the unit. Allow fluid to flow until no air is seen or until the brake pedal bottoms.
  6. Close the left bleeder, then slowly release the pedal. Wait 15 seconds.
  7. Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6, including the 15 second wait, until no air is seen in the fluid.
  8. Tighten the left internal bleed valve to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  9. Repeat Steps 3-7 at the right bleeder on the front of the unit.
  10. When bleeding of the right port is complete, tighten the right internal bleed valve to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  11. Remove the 3 special tools.
  12. Check the master cylinder fluid level, refilling as necessary.
  13. Bleed the individual brake circuits at each wheel.
  14. Switch the ignition ON . Use the hand scanner to perform 3 function tests on the system.
  15. Carefully test drive the vehicle at moderate speeds; check for proper pedal feel and brake operation. If any problem is noted in feel or function, repeat the entire bleeding procedure.

How do i bleed the brake system

First, before you do the bleeding, did you "open" any of the lines? Was there a caliper replaced?

If no line was opened, you do not need to bleed the brakes.

If so, please let me know and I will post the bleed procedures for you.

Why are you thinking about bleeding the brakes? Spongy brake pedal?

Bleed the brake lines

start at the passenger rear tire, have someone PUMP up brakes and hold pressure on them, release pressure by locating small bleeder screw, loosen screw 1/4 turn, brake fluid/air should come out, after brake petal reaches floor tighten bleeder, repeat process until only brake fluid comes out. go to driver side rear repeat, go to pass. side front repeat, go to driver side front repeat, after each bleeding make sure you check brake fluid in reservoir.

Bleeding brakes

No need to run the engine. Start the bleed procedure from the caliper farthest from the master cylinder, and work toward it. This means bleed the passenger rear first, then the driver rear, then passenger front, then driver front. Don't stop bleeding any caliper until you get three or so consecutive streams of air-free fluid through the bleeder. Monitor the level of fluid in the cylinder, and be sure the cap is on while bleeding - only open it to add additional fluid as needed.
