I have a 1999 mercury cougar v6, my heat gauge will say it's overheating when I'm driving but when I pull up to a stop light it will go down . My gas gauge also fluctuates even when full but that problem is more annoying then concerning. Any ideas on what could be causing the temp gauge to fluctuate?

SOURCE: antifreeze ts boiling back into reservoir.

it sounds like a possible head gasket problem, you can get the fluctuation from combustion gases getting pumped into your cooling system and creating gas pockets,i would suggest taking it to a shop and have them do a block test to look for combustion in the cooling system to confirm the problem, that way you will know for sure,if it comes up negative they can also perform a flow test to make sure there is no restriction in the cooling system such as a plugged radiator or a bad thermostat, hope this sheds a little light on it

SOURCE: gas gauge flucuates to empty and full so we never know if we have enough gas. What to do?

It is a common problem. It is a faulty in tank sender. You can just replace the sending unit by removing tank.

SOURCE: temperature gauge is fluctuating while driving.

I'm thinking the coolnat level is low, and this might be caused by a bad head gasket - At least $800 to fix - sorry.

SOURCE: Temperature gauge fluctuates

First of all you have a bad heater core that needs to be replaced. Second you may have a bad temperature sensor. Make sure the radiator if full of water

So what do you have for voltage at the battery? Sounds like the alternator went bad. There should be around 14 volts at the battery with the engine running. Anything less and the alternator would be the first thing I suspected.

Hi,

The overheating and lack of cabin heat both point to a failed engine thermostat which would be stuck closed. At the warm up stage, the coolant stays in the engine block to bring the engine to efficient operating temperature, then it opens and circulates the coolant through the radiator and heat core. If the thermostat is stuck closed, the engine will overheat, and coolant will never reach the heater core, and you will not get cabin heat.

Blinking oil light at idle which goes away during driving could be a low oil level, but may also be a drop in oil pressue. You could have a clogged oil fliter (at best) pickup tube, or a failing oil pump.

My 99 mercury cougar v6 is stuttter when i drive it will shut off while driving and the car acts like there is no gas in it pass a 1/4 of a tank what is this?

I had the same problem, but the problem didn't start until winter when it got below 0 degrees celcius. it would almost bronco jump and stall at stop lights, (almost rear ended a few people...not safe at all) and then when i'd start it up, i'd rev it and it would stall...but still starting again everytime.. it turned out that.this car is really good and developing condensation in the fuel line/tank...I went and bought a 2 dollar bottle of gas-line antifreeze (any gas station) put it in with the gas and filled 'er up with a tank of premium (cause it burns hotter) and the problem was solved almost instantly. (after about 20 minutes of driving) it saved me from having to get my entire pump replaced...try that out..if it is only since winter started(i dunno where u are) it could very well be your problem.
