I have a 97 honda civic dx. It has a 5 speed manual tranny. It is very hard to get it in reverse sometimes, if I shift into 1st & 2nd then it usually goes into reverse. Then if I forget to take it out of 5th gear and come to a complete stop I can't shift out of 5th. Now it is hard to get in 3rd sometimes. Any ideas?

SOURCE: 91 maximal 5 speed won't go into 1st 3rd and 5th

I had same problem with mine when I first got it. It's really quite a simple fix, if indeed it is the same problem. Anyway you need to jack up the front end and support it on both sides with jack stands. crawl up underneath the car and look for where your gear shifter comes down through the floor of the car. follow the linkage, and check that its nice and tight. I am telling you this from memory so sorry for the vagueness, but there are two pretty big screws holding it in place. Maybe they are lose or as it was in my case, one fell out. I replaced the screw and tightened the other and voila! worked beautifully. Hope this helps.

2006 honda civic 5 speed manual trans engine surges when down shifting from 2nd to 1st

Greetings & salutations Robert Avila,

(First question on FIXYA... Welcome).

Your engine surging and what gear you
"DOWN-SHIFT" to ... ought have very little in
common save for one condition (I can think of)...

Your clutch RELEASE is MARGINAL..!!

Check your master/slave clutch cylinders to see
if there is any leakage (fluid might also be low)...

These are not EXPENSIVE and USUALLY fail
in pairs...

If the surging happens with the clutch released... that
is a WORN CLUTCH DISC (replacement time)...

Mechanics manual is a MUST.

MOST IMPORTANT tip of this entry...

NEVER EVER ever let the weight of the transmission
be SUPPORTED by the input shaft...
