What causes the RPM needle to fluctuate when gas pedal is pressed?

Replaced the MAF Sensor, tune-up, ignition coils 3, 4 and 5, cleaned injectors. This was complete by a certified Maintenance Tech two weeks earlier after my car went into performance mode and the engine light came on.

Hi Antonio ,
What is the real problem ? are you getting RPM needle fluctuation while driving or the the engine light that came up after that minor engine service ?
As I understand you are having fluctuating RPM after that minor engine tune up. If there is no sound than it could be a problem of throttle body.

I did a scan when the engine light came on and P0121, Bank 1 system Too Lean was present. We cleaned the throttle body, sensors, contacts and checked all harnesses and wires. The car runs better but the RPM fluctuations, hesitation and torque noise continues.

You need to run a scanner and pull the fault codes off it. You need to double check the correct parts have been fitted. were any of the parts pattern? They may not necessarily be bad but with the coil packs if they have different characteristics to the O/E that can affect the running. Start with the simple stuff, check all connections, wires and earths. Look for chaffing or broken wires inside. If its the 4.2 engine then the throttle body issue was long solved. 90% of the time its not the components but wiring/earthing issues.

I presume your car is a old xj8 and not the xj350 version. what fault codes were logged when the engine light came on and i guess restricted performance was displayed on the instrument pack to make you have the mass air flow sensor and ign. coils replaced ? these cars had problems with the throttle bodies but the year of your car i would have thought it be past these issues. we renewed throttle bodies from just after this car was put on the market under a recall action but this was a problem related to the throttle butterfly sticking shut on overun a problem i recall with the throttle motor so i do not think it is your problem let me have the original fault codes and will try and help,

SOURCE: Jaguar 1995 XJ6 idle doesn't hold

I had this problem with my wifes car. I went through the car top to toe and found more than one problem causing this intermittant issue.
I found a weak crank sensor, when warm it was intermittantly losing a signal, replaced it and the problem was a little better, I then found that the throttle position sensor was also intermittantly not within the range it should be, replaced it and it helped, I then was getting the oxygen sensor code and that was only due to the car stalling, nothing to do with the o2's, I finally traced the final issue to the integral harness on the valve body inside the transmission, I replaced that harness and fitted a new transmission speed sensor and the car has been perfect.
I know you have several issues here that could be your problem but you now have a base to start from.
Last thing is the car may just need an engine set-up if you are no longer having any codes. This is only done by the dealer using there WDS computer system. The perform a oxygen sensor orientation test, they set-up the kick down and also set-up the Throttle positon sensor (TPS).
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: check engine light is on,display says restricted performance

Anything can cause the check engine light to go on from a loose gas cap, to a transmission issue. When the onboard computer detects an issue, it will restrict performance so as to not damage the engine any further. An Oil change won't affect this light. The only way to determine the cause of the light is to have the computer scanned with an OBD-II tool (Autozone does this for free) to determine the codes and cause for the light. You can also clear the light with the OBD-II tool, but if the problem is still there, the light will just come back on

SOURCE: jaguar s-type restricted performance

I had the same problem. Restricted performance and running rough at 3000 RPM. I have an OBDII code reader and found that the problem was in the air mass flow sensor, which is just after the air filter. I pulled this out and found it was dirty and had butterfly wings in it. The last shop where I had the oil changed replaced the filter for me but put in the wrong size. Close but no cigar. Bought some *** Flow Sensor cleaner at auto store and fixed the problem. Get an OBDII reader with the ability to erase the codes. Comes in real handy.

SOURCE: Jaguar x type 2004 2.5 petrol V6, 38500 miles, codes P0171, P0174

Have exactly the same issue on 04 jag x type 2.5. So far have replaced fuel filter, air filter k&n, plugs ngk. Codes cleared, same issue. Seems to appear when air temp is cold and eng is warm.
Am replacing upstream O2 sensors and cleaning MAF next. Will keep you posted if it clears up. Did you ever find the cause?

My 1996 Taurus when I press the gas pedal when cold it sputters and lacks power. When it warms up it runs great.

Possible causes - Faulty spark plug 5
- Clogged or faulty fuel injector 5
- Faulty ignition coil 5
- Fuel injector 5 harness is open or shorted
- Fuel injector 5 circuit poor electrical connection
- Ignition coil 5 harness is open or shorted
- Ignition coil 5 circuit poor electrical connection
- Insufficient cylinder 5 compression
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Intake air leak

The P0305 code means that the cylinder 5 is misfiring or is randomly misfiring. Start by checking for intake leaks an if no leaks are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs on cylinder 5. If the problem persist more tests needs to be done to diagnose problem, see "Possible Causes

When is the code detected? Engine Cylinder 5 is Misfiring.

When a misfire occurs, engine speed will fluctuate. If the engine speed fluctuates enough to cause the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal to vary, the Engine Control Module (ECM) can determine that a misfire is occurring.

Misfiring. Error codes p0306, p0351, p0352

p0306 refers to cylinder 6 misfire detected===causes engine mechanical fault--wiring---ignition/fuel system--injector ---ECT/MAF sensor---ECM
IF there was a mechanical fault (hydraulic follower ) or valve it would be there most of the time and not just on start up. Possible injector fault but I would be inclined to check out the MAF sensor codes p0351 &2 refer to ignition coil A and ignition coil B primary /secondary--circuit malfunction === causes --wiring--ignition coil--ECM ( all causes for the both)
going on this check out the coils and check that the wiring and connections are clean and tight. basically I would be inclined to change out the coils and check /replace the MAF sensor.
change the engine --sounds like advice to get some extra money out of you.

Gas pedal wont work 2005 f 150

You need spark plugs, the champion on piece ones
in the motor (were talking 5.4 V8 here)
Can't have plugs in there older than 3 years

You need front oxygen sensors replaced at 100,000 miles

You most likely have several failed COP Ignition Coils, that
give you throttle body codes (the problem IS the coils NOT
the tps sensor or TACM on throttle body-just replace the
coils yourself (Rock Auto.Com for parts)

Clean the MAF Sensor (CRC MAF Cleaner)
New air filter

V70 rpm high fluctuation at idle and engine stops

I would start by unplugging the throttle position sensor then start it and see if there is a change. Could also be the slow idle sensor or the crank position sensor? Have you looked that code up or had it computer checked? most the auto part stores here will let you use one in the parking lot hope that helps

2002 escape 3.0 idle fluctuates and misfires when driving

No such thing as a tune-up

All you did was replace spark plugs which should be
done every 3 years

Oxygen Sensors get replaced at 100,000 miles which you
also did

You most likely have an intake gasket leak, smoke test
the entire Evap System & Engine

You also are have bad igniton coils
